Construction Snapshot - Whakaahua Hanganga

As earthworks season comes to an end it's a good chance to reflect on the good progress made over the warmer months on the Takitimu North Link Stage One project - the most productive season since work began in December 2021.

Our 2022/23 programme was affected by the wettest summer on record, with just 65 out of around 100 production days achieved. In that year, between 1 January and 15 February there was 486.9mm rain, during the same period in 2024 there was just 83mm!

We are pleased to be tracking well to this year's earthworks targets with more dirt shifted between September and December 2023 than the entire last season.

There has been significant progress on 3 local road bridges, with the bridge at Cambridge Road now finished and open, and Wairoa Road and Minden Road near completion.

See the progress in the stories and photos below.

SH2/Fifteenth Ave bridge

Site preparation works are underway at SH2/Fifteenth Ave with preloading, drainage and tree clearance making good progress. The construction of the new bridge (connecting to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road) is due to start construction late 2024.

SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road - Te Huarahi Utu o Takitimu Drive

Work in this area is becoming more visible with pre-load and surcharge near completion for the flyover bridge abutments and roundabout (northbound) and bypass road (southbound).

Piling has started for the 363m flyover bridge this month, with an estimated 14 month construction period.

Te Ara o Cambridge - Cambridge Road bridge finished

The new bridge at Cambridge Road between Bethlehem and Tauriko is now open, marking a major milestone for the project.

The completion of this bridge has been a complex job, which now enables the expressway to be built underneath it. It is the first of 8 bridge structures on the project to be completed.

We would like to thank our project neighbours and local people for their support, cooperation, and patience during the building of the bridge and associated road closure. We couldn’t do this without the support of the local community and our partners at Tauranga City Council.

In the next phase of work, with the bridge in use, the new Cambridge Road East intersection will be built. Please follow the instructions of our traffic management team.

Te Arawhiti o Te Ara o Wairoa - Wairoa Road overbridge

This 100 metre bridge at Wairoa Road was built in 2023, tie-in works are near completion to connect the new bridge, with one lane in use and works continuing to escavate underneath. There will be a 21 metre cut down to the new road level.

Te rohe o Te Rangi tua nehe - Minden Gully

This interchange is a collection of 3 bridges providing on and off ramps, 25 metres above the floor of Minden Gully. This picture was taken in March 2024 above Minden Road, facing east towards Te Mete Valley.

The off-ramp bridge will be completed mid-2024 and will be in use as a haul road, shifting the project's construction vehicles from SH2.

Te Hakao stream is an important tributary that links the mouth of the Wairoa River to Te Rangi tua nehe (Minden), this is an area of cultural significance.

Transport Minister visits worksite

Transport Minister Simeon Brown visited the Takitimu North Link worksite in March, joined by Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford and Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell. They viewed progress on site at Cambridge Road overbridge and Te Rangi tua nehe / Minden Gully interchange, and met with senior NZTA Waka Kotahi staff and project team.

Congratulations!

Fulton Hogan’s Takitimu North Link project Construction Manager Dan Parkes (left) and Project Director Brian Robertson have clicked over 50 years, jointly, with Fulton Hogan! The pair bring significant experience to the project, with Dan having worked on Tauranga Eastern Link, Hairini Link and SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road, and Brian on some of Auckland's largest motorway projects, including the Northern Corridor.

They are leading the team on the immense Takitimu North Link project, which will employ 350-400 people over its duration, and involve thousands more through different phases of work.

Wahine Toa mentoring program

In February, as part of the Takitimu North Link project’s mentoring program “Wahine Toa”, women from the project team visited the team at Port of Tauranga Limited.

It was a fantastic opportunity to get around the table with like-minded women to share lessons learned, inspiring stories, make new connections, and learn something new about a different industry.

Although civil infrastructure and port industries are different they're similar in that they have less than 15% women in the workplace. Those who attended from both sides said it was a fantastic opportunity and hope to meet again in the future.
