NT Fire and Emergency ServicesBarkly and Central Australia residents urged to prepare ahead of heavy rains this weekend20 February 2026 The NT Emergency Service is urging residents and visitors in the Barkly and Central Australia regions to prepare now ahead of heavy rain, severe weather and potential flooding this weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that heavy and locally intense rainfall is expected across the regions, with the potential for dangerous flash flooding. In response to the forecast and following recent flash flooding in the area NT Emergency Service has deployed additional staff and volunteers from Darwin to support local crews if required. NT Emergency Service, Deputy Chief Officer Adam White said teams are actively preparing for the situation and reminds the community how quickly conditions could change during periods of heavy rainfall. “Dangerous flash flooding is unpredictable by nature and can develop very rapidly,” he said. “In some cases, water levels can rise in a matter of minutes, which doesn’t allow much time to prepare once impacts begin.” “However, these are exactly the kinds of conditions our staff and volunteers train for.” “We are resourced, equipped and ready to respond, and we have taken a precautionary approach to make sure additional support is available if needed.” Residents need to have an up-to date emergency kit and be ready to enact their emergency plan as needed and to consider what they would need if power, phone reception or road access were disrupted for several days. It is important to consider your pets and animals in your plans. Emergency kits should include essential items such as a battery-powered radio, important documents, medications, sturdy shoes, and at least three days’ supply of food and water. Simple steps around the home can also help reduce risk, including understanding your local flood history, identifying higher areas to move belongings if needed. Always check road conditions before travelling at RoadReport.nt.gov.au, drive to condition and never drive into flooded water. Stay informed through trusted sources, including ABC Radio and SecureNT.
