Te Ara Tūtohu: Waitara to Bell Block

10 August 2022

There will be temporary changes to the traffic management at Waitara from Wednesday 10 August. Traffic travelling on SH3 will be switched to run on the northbound lane 400 metres from the Princess Street intersection, so that crews can install pipe under the road to link it to the new stormwater pipe that’s being installed as part of the Te Ara Tūtohu: SH3 Waitara to Bell Block safety improvement project.

This temporary change will be in place for approximately five days while the pipe installation work is undertaken.  Traffic will return to the southbound lane for the weekend and then it will switch back to the northbound lane on Monday 15 August for approximately 2 days.

This should not cause any further delay but the 400 metres of road on the northbound lane is unsealed, so motorists are advised to take care and comply with temporary signage at all times.

Waitara detour

A reminder that northbound light vehicles should continue to use the detour through Waitara. Trucks travelling north will continue to use the state highway under stop/go traffic management to avoid safety issues associated with large vehicles travelling through Waitara.

Waka Kotahi thanks road users and local residents for their patience and cooperation while we undertake these important works to improve the safety of SH3 between Waitara and Bell Block.
