Guiding girls into a construction career

In the middle of March, we held an event with the local GirlGuiding NZ Rangers group. The aim of the evening was to show the wide range of career opportunities that the construction industry offers, provide the chance to meet some of our talented women project team members and to enjoy a tour of the construction site.

After a short presentation and health and safety briefing, we headed out on site, which was the highlight of the evening. The Guides kept the project team on their toes by asking many questions.

We received great feedback from the group, and (fingers crossed) we may see more young women in the industry in the future.

Onsite update

The team has started installing the concrete beams on the next span of the new bridge and once this is completed, the temporary works around the pier including the scaffolding, formworks and the sheet piles creating the cofferdam will be removed letting the Manukau Harbour surrounding the large V pier again. This will take a few months for the team to complete as it is a complex task.

Work on a third pier is also progressing well and we’re getting ready to build another cofferdam so work can start on a fourth pier.

We’ve now built 18 of the 26 spans of temporary platform on the western side of the Old Māngere Bridge. The platform will be used to deconstruct the old bridge and this work is planned to start in a few weeks.

Supporting local community sports

During the last weekend of March, our neighbour Waka Ama, the Canoe Association held the Manukau Harbour Challenge Race. As one of the sponsors of the event, we were glad to hear the competition went well and everyone had a good time. Check out their Facebook page “Portage Crossing Outrigger Canoe Club” to see more photos or if you’re keen to learn more about the club.
