As we enjoy the final days of summer, we’re pleased to bring you the August newsletter, filled with valuable updates and resources to support your work in the community. This month has seen a range of successful initiatives, and we’re excited to share them with you.

Lately, we have hosted productive 1:1 sessions at our Colindale office, where members met with our own COS team to discuss funding strategies and organisational growth. These meetings provided tailored advice, helping our community organisations to secure vital support for their projects.

Looking ahead, we’re eagerly preparing for the Barnet Together Conference on 30th September. This key event will bring together community organisations from across Barnet to network, collaborate, and share best practices. We’re also excited about our upcoming Barnet Voluntary Sector Forum meeting on 25th September, where we’ll discuss important issues and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Upcoming Meetings & Events

Our next Member Network Meeting in September

Join us for a crucial Member Network Meeting focused on the link between poverty and mental health, jointly organised by the Young Barnet Foundation and Inclusion Barnet. This event provides a unique opportunity for members to share, learn, reflect, and collaborate on addressing these pressing issues in our community.

Our special guest speaker, Charlotte Rainer, co-author of the new report ‘A Dual Crisis: the hidden link between poverty and children’s mental health’, will share key insights and recommendations relevant to Barnet. The meeting will also include important sector updates, including pre-launch details of the upcoming September 2024 Space2Grow funding round.

St Mary-at-Finchley is gearing up for an exciting “Autumn of Activity” for the local community in Finchley, Barnet, and beyond.

Heritage Tours
Monday 9th - Sunday 15th September
St Mary-at-Finchley has been chosen to participate in the Heritage Open Days Festival 2024 as the oldest building in Finchley, boasting a Grade II* listed building and seven Grade II listed monuments in its churchyard. The tours are free of charge and can be booked here.

Guitar Recital
Saturday 7th September, 6pm at St Mary-at-Finchley, 26 Hendon Lane, N3 1TR
David Harvey will perform Baroque masterpieces by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Sylvius Leopold Weiss, François Couperin, and J.S. Bach.

Maths for Children (7-9 years old)
Saturday 15th September, 12-1pm at St Mary’s Small Hall

Cheese, Wine and Piano with Julian Gallant
Sunday 22nd September, 6pm at St Mary-at-Finchley, 26 Hendon Lane, N3 1TR
Join us for an evening with pianist Julian Gallant, who has performed with ensembles such as the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Oxford Philomusica, Moscow Philharmonic, City of London Sinfonia, and Kiev Chamber Orchestra. Julian has also served as Chief Conductor of the Russian Chamber Orchestra of London and Director of the Oxford Philomusica.

The Chapter House Set
Drop by the Blue Beetle every Wednesday from 4th September at 27 Hendon Lane, N3 1TR for a free coffee or tea from 10.30am, and/or a free lunch from 12 noon. Meet fellow local residents as part of our “Chapter House Set”.

Free English Conversation Group

Supporting Women and Families Affected by Domestic Abuse in Barnet

Barnet Council is providing essential support for women and families affected by domestic abuse through a range of targeted programmes and workshops. These initiatives are designed to help individuals move forward, build safer futures, and access the necessary support services.

• Rise Programme: This 6-week programme is tailored for women who have been affected by domestic abuse, focusing on moving forward and creating a safer, stronger future.

• Picking up the Pieces Programme: A 3-week programme designed for mothers and female carers with children who have been affected by domestic abuse.

• Yoga and Meditation Groups: These sessions offer women who have experienced domestic abuse a space to heal and find peace through yoga and meditation.

Free Films for Small Charities

Help Film is a charity dedicated to supporting other charities, offers a unique opportunity for small and medium-sized organisations to benefit from professional video and animation services. If your charity has an annual income under £1 million, you can apply for a free, high-quality film produced by professional filmmakers based in your community.

 A total of six films will be created, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis—so early submission is encouraged. Help Film aims to review all applications within two weeks of receipt.

Health Equity Fund

Legal & General and UCL Institute of Health Equity have recently launched a £3 million ‘Health Equity’ Fund, aimed at supporting projects across the UK that address health inequalities. This fund is particularly focused on projects that tackle the social determinants of health—non-medical social and economic factors like housing, education, infrastructure, and the quality of work.

• Grant Amount: Up to £75,000
• Eligibility: Organisations (e.g., charities, social enterprises, community groups) with projects that have a local impact on reducing health inequality, especially those serving under-represented or underserved communities. The fund is also looking for projects with the potential to scale up, be replicated nationally, and become financially sustainable in the medium term. Innovative approaches and those demonstrating local support and key stakeholder engagement are highly encouraged.
• Application Deadline: 3rd September 2024
• Application Process: Interested organisations should submit an initial Expression of Interest (EOI). Successful proposals will be invited to submit a more detailed bid at a later stage.

Schass Foundation

The Schass Foundation provides financial support to organisations engaged in general charitable activities, with a particular focus on educational and cultural initiatives. The foundation typically funds projects that contribute to the community’s overall well-being and development.

The National Churches Trust: Medium Grants

The National Churches Trust’s Medium Grants programme, formerly known as the 'Gateway Grant Programme,' offers grants ranging from £3,000 to £10,000. These grants support urgent and essential maintenance and repair projects costing between £20,000 and £80,000. The fund also supports project development and investigative work up to RIBA planning stage 1, helping churches prepare for major projects.

• Grant Amount: £3,000 - £10,000 (up to 50% of project costs)
• Eligibility: Churches with urgent maintenance and repair needs or those preparing for significant projects.

Millward Charitable Trust

Protective Security Schemes for Places of Worship

• Opportunity: Funding for security measures.
• Eligibility: Places of worship and associated faith community centres vulnerable to hate crime.

Barnet Ukraine Fund

Are you an active member of the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) operating within the London Borough of Barnet? Are you an IB member, or a member of the Young Barnet Foundation? If yes, you can apply for between £200-£2000 to run activities which support the further integration of Ukrainian refugees arriving and living in the Borough. Read more here.

The National Lottery Community Fund

An oldie, but a goodie! The National Lottery Community Foundation ‘Awards For All’ funding is a great place to start. They offer grants between £300-£20,000. They also offer another grant called 'Reaching Communities' which starts from £20,001+. If your organisation hasn’t applied to the National Lottery Community Fund for Awards for All funding yet, we recommend trying!
