Click here Cotton Matters Strong interest in the 2026 Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program (AFCLP) has led to the largest cohort in the program’s history, following an unprecedented number of applications for the industry’s flagship leadership initiative. This year exceeded the previous record, with organisers receiving an exceptional field of applicants. As a result, the selection panel expanded the intake to 17 participants meet the latest cohort. At Nobby on the Darling Downs, Alan Richards has found a way to combine two very different passions: cotton farming and beekeeping. While his son Matt manages most of the farm operations, including 70–80 hectares of cotton each year along with pickling onions and other crops, Alan continues to keep bees that produce a unique honey. The Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) has launched a new Cotton Course, offering flexible, targeted learning for people across the Australian cotton industry. Delivered by the University of Sydney in partnership with CottonInfo and CSD, the course consists of three microcredentials designed to build knowledge and skills without the need for traditional university requirements. Enrolments are now open for the first microcredential, Australian Cotton Farming Systems, which will take place in Narrabri from 10–12 March 2026. Tim Gainsford from the Macquarie Valley has been trialing cover cropping in his flood furrow cotton system for three years. A practice he adopted to manage infiltration issues in red soils, but this year, Tim’s experience shows how results can vary. AgriFutures Australia and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry are conducting research to better understand agricultural labour and skills shortages across the Riverina, Wide Bay, South East Perth, Murray–Darling and Toowoomba Darling Downs. Growers and workers in the identified regions are invited to take part in an online survey and upcoming consultation sessions. There is still time to apply for our Southern NSW Regional Manager position. The full-time role involves helping growers implement the myBMP program, working with regional Cotton Grower Associations and water user groups and representing the industry to stakeholders. Eligible Queensland growers can still access a 15% water discount through the Irrigation Pricing Rebate Scheme, delivered by QRIDA. Cotton Australia encourages all eligible growers to apply before the rebate closes, as it will end once the $25.3 million allocated by the Queensland Government is fully claimed. News in brief
