Jeff Husa, DVM, DABVP (Swine Health Management)
Being Our Best Well-being. We talk about it often but do we address it effectively? Life’s busy! It takes time and energy to care for patients, clients, family, home…the list goes on. In the midst of the scramble, please remember to take time for your own self-care. Yep, easier said than done…too busy.
I’m writing this as I fly home from a 9 day, off-the-grid wilderness adventure. No signal, no email, no ringing phone, no (?) stress. Ensuring the group’s basic needs are met can create stress. But this is somehow different. Everyone looks out for everyone else. Did I head up the mountain in my best physical condition? Not by a long shot…too busy. Was my pack pared down to the lightest it could be? Nope…too busy. Was I tempted to bow out of the trip for a dozen reasons at the last minute? You bet…too busy. Is my body sore as heck now? Oh my, yes…too busy. Am I glad I went anyway? Absolutely! I was NOT too busy! I’m recharged and rediscovered my center. Time to unplug has been
just what I needed when I needed it.
Should everyone toss on a backpack and head into the wilderness for a week? Maybe not, but please, please, please take the time for your own well-being. Your patients, families, and friends need you at your best. We need you at your best!
Speaking of being at your best, take advantage of ABVP’s new Streamlined Credentialing Pathway for existing Diplomates. This fast-track path to additional species certifications leverages common requirements from your initial RVS success. If your knowledge and skills have expanded to other species, jump on board. Prove to the world your myriad specialist-caliber skills by becoming a Diplomate in multiple RVSs!
So, if you’re looking for advice about how to add wilderness excursions to your well-being plans, let’s grab a beverage and plan your journey. If you are ready to show the world that you are the best of the best in multiple specialties, dive into the Handbook and give your Regent a shout.
And as always, thank you for being your best! Jeff

If you have a simple technical issue please contact Prolydian at support+abvp@prolydian.com before emailing info@abvp.com.
Question about your MOC? Contact your MOC RVS Vice Chair first. The email addresses are in the MOC Handbook. IMPORTANT! Journal Club points application: Remember the NAME of your Journal Club Quiz must be the YEAR and MONTH of the quiz. The DATE that goes on the application must be the year
that it was available. The system counts a maximum of six per year. If you are getting an error in uploading, it is likely that you have tried to upload too many in one calendar year. There is an example in the MOC handbook. e.g. I complete and upload the January 2023 Journal Club today, I enter January 2023 as the date, not September 2024. Dates of other items: Remember to enter the date of the item you are uploading, NOT the date you uploaded it. Otherwise, it will not get counted in the proper year. e.g. If I upload my ABVP 2023 Symposium certificate for attendance points today, the date I enter needs to be April 2023, when the Symposium occurred, not September 2024. Failure to do this correctly results in a lot of time and work on our volunteers and makes it so the honor system and auto-approve and auto-counting of certain items will not work. Incorrect items will be returned to you to reupload, even if they are found at final review in year 10. If incorrect items cannot be reconciled, this may result in failure to maintain certification.
Don't forget to check out our latest collection featuring our new logos. Our new collections include the classic ABVP logo and each RVS. Don’t miss out—grab yours today and wear it with pride!

If you have not received access to VIN, please email VIN directly at rounds@vin.com. ABVP cannot assist with access since Rounds are on the VIN platform.
If you are a newer Diplomate and interested in presenting, please email ce@abvp.com. Each lecture is about 50 minutes long and you will need to keep an eye on your lecture's message board after the lecture for a couple of weeks. VIN will pay you for your lecture. ABVP will help you with your lecture by assigning you a mentor, if you would like.
Researchers at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine are seeking neurodiverse specialty veterinarians as well as veterinarians currently in residency programs to complete a survey about their experiences pursuing a career in specialty veterinary medicine. The data from this survey will be used to assess challenges faced by neurodiverse veterinarians and to understand how veterinarians are finding solutions to overcome these challenges. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete. All responses are de-identified and will be kept confidential.
Neurodiversity, for the purposes of this survey, includes the following:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, including Asperger’s Syndrome)
- Bipolar disorder
- Dyslexia
- Dyscalculia
- Dysgraphia
- Dyspraxia
- Intellectual disabilities
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Sensory processing disorders
- Tourette’s syndrome
Due to known barriers to diagnosis, a professional diagnosis of a neurodiverse trait is not a requirement for participation - individuals who self-identify as neurodiverse are encouraged to participate.
Once you start the survey, you have one month to complete it. The survey period ends on October 31st, 2024.
