India, the world's second-largest cotton producer after China, still needs high-quality cotton imports, and a bilateral trade agreement with India has created new opportunities for Australian producers and strengthened industry relationships between the two countries. Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay and Chair, Nigel Burnett recently featured on an ABC Landline episode about the opportunities for Australian Cotton under a free trade agreement. Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay recently participated in the Australia-India CEO Forum agriculture round table at the GrainCorp Offices in Sydney. The meeting focused on developing a new economic roadmap for India, with key discussions on what is currently working well in agriculture between Australia and India, strategies to achieve the best gains over the next decade, and how to enhance cooperation with Indian agricultural producers and providers. At the recent Better Cotton Conference in Istanbul, the impacts of incoming EU legislation, carbon accounting, and traceability were high on the agenda. During the conference, Cotton Australia was recognized for its 10-year partnership with Better Cotton, acknowledging the hard work of certified growers in implementing sustainability practices at the farm level. The trip was funded by the Federal Government’s ATMAC program. The Federal Government begins the process of water buybacks from this coming Monday 15 July, launching tenders in the southern Murray Darling Basin seeking entitlements for up to 70 gigilitres. The move has sparked significant concern among farmers and regional communities. In an interview on ABC Radio NSW Country Hour, NSW Irrigators Council CEO Claire Miller expressed strong opposition to the buybacks, warning of their potential to devastate local economies and inflate food prices. Cotton growers across Australia are gearing up for National Farm Safety Week, happening from July 14 to 20. The Queensland launch, hosted by Darling Downs cotton grower Jamie Grant on his Jimbour farm, provided attendees with the opportunity to connect with other growers and exchange practical safety tips. The Cotton Australia AGM will be held in Plenary B (upstairs), Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre on Tuesday, 6 August at 8.30 am. The 2023–24 Annual Report is available online.
