Re-thinking healthcare systems
November 1 marked the beginning of Diabetes Awareness Month – an opportunity for the diabetes community to unite and raise awareness of what needs to be done to improve the lives of people with diabetes (PwD) and those at risk. Since the discovery of insulin over a century ago, we have made incredible strides in the treatment and management of diabetes, not least through the adoption of novel medicines and technologies. Yet, unmet medical needs remain and many PwD still face inequalities in access to care. Innovative solutions, new medicines and technologies, no matter how groundbreaking, cannot truly make a difference if they are not accessible to everyone who needs them and structurally embedded in the care provided. The COVID-19
pandemic demonstrated that our healthcare systems need structural transformations to effectively support the needs of people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes. True systemic change requires re-thinking healthcare systems. It needs to foster the adoption of a health-in-all policy approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness between individual (e.g., genetics) and external health factors (e.g., social, commercial, economic and environmental determinants). This re-think should also remove barriers and facilitate the delivery of integrated, person-centred and personalised care across the life course. Diabetes prevention and care are highly complex, because of diabetes’ interplay with other conditions and with all levels of care. This means that prevention, management and care make use of, and
depend on, all aspects and elements of a national health system. As such, diabetes is a good marker of healthcare systems’ resilience and sustainability and an excellent condition to use as a basis for re-thinking healthcare systems. Throughout November, IDF Europe will work closely with the diabetes community to raise awareness of the urgent need to transform healthcare systems across Europe for improved and more equitable diabetes prevention and care. We are committed to building a sustainable future where everyone has the opportunity to achieve the best possible standard of health. This November, we invite you to follow our activities and join our calls to action. Together, united, let’s act on diabetes and drive transformation for a healthier tomorrow.
YOURAH members visited the Helmholtz Munich Diabetes Centre
On October 23-25, a group of YOURAH advocates visited the Helmholtz Munich Diabetes Centre to meet and interview leading scientists and researchers working on the ISLET project, an EU-funded research project in which IDF Europe fosters the engagement of PwD and supports communication and dissemination activities. ISLET seeks to
generate islet cells to replace those destroyed in people with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) to enable insulin production to restart. One of the project’s key principles is to foster exchanges between young advocates and young scientists to promote scientific understanding of research and cell therapy development, and explore the young advocates’ views, needs and aspirations. Through the interviews they conducted, YOURAH members will contribute to bringing this research closer to the diabetes community.

Less than one week to the
IDF Europe YOURAH Forum
2024!
Each year, IDF Europe organises alumni get-together events for its YOURAH members – the YOURAH Forum. These events provide a platform for past Youth Leadership Lab participants to reconnect and engage in shared advocacy efforts. This year, 16 YOURAH members will join the YOURAH Forum which will take place in Brussels on November 7-9, with the theme “Raising the voice of the youth diabetes community at the European level”. Participants will be trained in advocacy and communication skills, learn about the role of EU institutions, design advocacy campaigns to accelerate action on diabetes and interact with European decision-makers. We look forward to welcoming this year’s participants in Brussels!

Women and Diabetes: tackling hidden health disparities
On October 23, the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) monthly newsletter featured a guest article from IDF Europe on health disparities in diabetes related to gender. The article highlights how women living with diabetes face unique risks, such as a higher likelihood of developing complications compared to men. It calls for targeted action to address these disparities through investments in gender-specific research, improved access to early diagnosis and high-quality care for women and the establishment of policy framework to address systemic socio-economic barriers in healthcare.

Recognised: “The eyes as a window to the brain”
IDF Europe is part of the Horizon 2020 Recognised project which aims to determine the usefulness of the retina to identify people living with T2D and cognitive impairments. On October 10, on the occasion of World Sight Day, IDF Europe and the Recognised project raised awareness of the link between diabetes and eye health. PwD are 20-35% more likely than those without diabetes to develop diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of blindness. Everyone deserves clear vision and uninterrupted access to affordable screening can make that possible. Under the theme of World Sight Day, “Love your eyes” we called on policymakers to prioritise eye health
initiatives to prevent loss of sight.

IDF Europe joins a new project: SmartDiabetes
On October 25, IDF Europe Strategic Communications & Content Coordinator, Martina Boccardo, participated in the kick-off meeting of SmartDiabetes – a project funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) which aims to establish a comprehensive, value-based model for diabetes management, integrating digital therapy, data-driven tools and sustainable procurement practice to improve PwD's health and reduce systemic costs.
By adopting a value-based healthcare model, digital therapy platforms such as "SocialDiabetes" – a key component of SmartDiabetes – might have the potential to transform care delivery and improve health outcomes for PwD.
As a key partner in SmartDiabetes, IDF Europe will ensure that the perspectives and needs of PwD are central to the project’s development and execution. IDF Europe will also support communication and dissemination activities, sharing the project’s progress and results with the broader community.
