Excavation of the underpass starts soon

Work on excavating the SH1-SH18 underpass is to begin soon. When complete, the underpass will provide a direct motorway to motorway connection for those travelling from the north and heading west.

Excavation is being undertaken in stages with the first stage expected to take three months to complete. During this time, the soft clay will be excavated from under the new reinforced concrete roof slab and between the two reinforced concrete piled walls.

Before our team begin the ‘Big Dig’ they’ve had to undergo a two-day training course to ensure they have the skills required to work in the underpass environment. This has included learning fire suppression techniques, self-rescue techniques and basic ventilation principles.

The photo below is of Josh our Site Engineer and Paul our Foreman wearing their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) during their training.  Any worker entering the underpass exclusion zone is required to carry the SCSR on their person at all times.

We’ll be following their progress to learn more about how the team are getting on and share updates in our future e-news.

Ravi, NCI truck driver

Meet the project team

With over a million cubic metres of material which needs to be moved, being a truck driver for NCI will definitely keep you busy. We recently caught up with Ravi to learn more about his role.

“I’ve been a truck driver on NCI since the beginning and really enjoy my job – I’ve gone from having a love of cars to being able to drive a 23 tonne six wheeler truck everyday which is pretty cool.”

After collecting the truck from the depo, Ravi heads to site for a morning Health and Safety briefing and then starts the first of up to six roundtrips to the tip site where he deposits earth that the team have dug up.

“As we’re working alongside the motorway, space is very constrained and sometimes I only have a metre or so either side of my truck to navigate into and out of the work area. Staying focused is really important to ensure I can carry out my job safely.”

“I spend a majority of the day in the truck alone, but I’ve built up a great relationship with the team on site and it’s great to see how much we’ve all achieved since we began.”

Traffic switches now live on SH1 and SH18

Those travelling through the project area may have noticed that our team carried out two traffic switches, one on SH1 and one on SH18 this month, and you’re now driving on a different part of the motorway. These switches were necessary so we could move our work area and the changes are detailed below.

SH1: The southbound off-ramp at Upper Harbour Highway has returned to its original position, approximately 400m further south than it previously was. We originally kept the bus only off-ramp open but closed it after a few days because we noticed a lot of drivers were using this off-ramp and not the correct Upper Harbour Highway off-ramp. It was important to close the bus only off-ramp as it’ll soon become a direct bus lane into Constellation Station. Should drivers take this route, they’ll find themselves in the wrong place, so we want you to get used to using the correct off-ramp before that happens.

SH18: We needed to shift westbound vehicles from the current lanes so that we can continue work on building the new road which will become the westbound on-ramp. While you will notice that you’re now driving on a different part of the road, traffic cones are guiding drivers along the new route, so you don’t need to make any decisions about where to go.

See what’s been happening on site in our aerial video

A helicopter regularly flies over the project area so we can capture what changes have been happening on site. It’s a great way for us to track progress and see what our team on the ground have been up to. Click above to watch our latest video from July. All of our photos and videos can be seen on our project webpage.
