INI NEWS BULLETIN
January 2022

Dear friends, associates and supporters of INI,

Welcome to the January 2022 edition of our monthly news bulletin, we hope it finds you safe and well.

This month, we're celebrating the first five recipients of the INI Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mathematics; highlighting some significant ways in which support is offered to those wishing to participate in INI activities; and looking ahead with excitement to a very full year of collaboration and research.

We would also like to direct you towards the Newton Gateway to Mathematics' LinkedIn page: a recent addition to our social media presence, we hope it proves another convenient way to keep up to speed with their award-winning knowledge exchange activities.

Thanks as always for your continued support, and we wish a rewarding and successful 2022 to you all.

SIMONS FELLOWS: podcast interviews with all five current Simons Postdoctoral Fellows are now available online

We are pleased to announce that we have now recorded podcast interviews with all five recipients of the Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mathematics in the debut year of the scheme. Please click the link below to see short profiles of each Fellow, and to find links to brief (10-20 minute) interviews in which mathematical and personal backgrounds, motivations for applying, and impressions of life amongst researchers at INI and Cambridge's Faculty of Maths are energetically discussed.

The first five Simons Postdoctoral Fellows are: Aluna Rizzoli, Anagha Madhusudanan (pictured above), Antoine Remond-Tiedrez, Avi Mayorcas, and Emine Yildirim.

Thanks to the generous support of the Simons Foundation, the Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mathematics were established in 2021. The scheme was created to enable exceptional early career researchers in the mathematical sciences to gain experience, foster independence and forge new connections, thereby assisting them during the challenging realities of COVID-19 and aiding them on their way to a successful academic career.

These prestigious one-year fellowships see successful candidates spend four-to-six months participating in an INI programme with the remainder of the period spent at either of Cambridge University’s Departments of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS) or Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP).

SUPPORT SERVICES: highlighting the funding and care services available to INI participants

The Institute aspires to provide an excellent environment for delivering seminars and encouraging discussions, and wishes to share ideas and promote the mathematical sciences to the widest possible audience. To facilitate the attendance of all visitors, whether in a physical or virtual capacity and regardless of their background, race, gender, family obligations or country of origin, we have a number of significant support systems in place.

If you have considered a visit to the Institute in the past, but have hesitated due to:

  • the cost or availability of essential childcare;
  • specific mobility or other care needs;
  • concerns about the financial implications of visiting and living in the UK from a developing country;
  • reservations about travel costs from your home institution, wherever it is in the world

... there are schemes in place that may allow us to help ease these difficulties. Please visit the page linked below, and make sure to pass this information on to any of your contacts or colleagues who may also benefit from the opportunities available.

PROGRAMMES & WORKSHOPS: Looking ahead to a busy year at the Institute

Throughout 2022 the Institute will be operating a minimum of three programmes concurrently, with 10 in total being undertaken between January and December 2022. This represents a considerable increase in activity compared to previous years. To serve as a reminder of this exciting schedule, please find below a link to our listings homepage, as well as a direct link to download a PDF of the poster pictured above.

As always, please do forward this information to any relevant contacts or colleagues. Many of the listed workshops are still open for applications at the time of writing.
