Updated public health alert on boiling water

This media release has been updated with the following information: For areas that have Zippy water units, only the boiled water can be used for drinking once cooled. Do not use the cold filtered water.

10 March 2026

The Chief Health Officer has issued a boil water alert for the Greater Darwin and Palmerston areas.

Operation of the Darwin River Dam pump station has been impacted due to substantial flooding. Reserve bores at McMinns and Howard East have been activated to provide water supply, but there may be a risk of contamination to the water due to the proximity of onsite wastewater systems in the area.

NT Health is requesting people in Darwin and Palmerston use cooled, boiled water or bottled water as a precaution for:

  • Drinking
  • Preparing food
  • Preparing baby food
  • Brushing teeth

The boil water alert applies to all water dispensed from midday today and to people who are connected to the main water system, and/or receive a Power and Water Corporation bill.

For areas that have Zippy water units, only the boiled water can be used for drinking once cooled. Do not use the cold filter water.

If you are unsure about your water supply, please boil before use.
