Pavement dig-outs and shoulder reconstruction underway at the State Highway 1 (SH1) Totara road rebuild. This work is now finished – chipsealing and line marking are complete, and the site has been fully reinstated.

Welcome to the Northland state highway maintenance roadworks update.

In this e-newsletter, we share updates on maintenance and renewal roadworks across the state highway network from Topuni all the way to Te Reinga Wairua (Cape Reinga).

Upcoming roadworks

State highways with scheduled works this week:

• SH1 – Mangamuka Gorge, Ohaewai, Waiomio, Akerama, Whangārei central, Oakleigh, Uretiti, Waipu
• SH10 – Oromahoe
• SH12 – Dargaville
• SH15 – south of Kaikohe

Note: Roadworks may be postponed due to rain or other factors that disrupt the weekly schedule.

State Highway 1 - Kawakawa to Cape Reinga

State Highway 1 -  Mangamuka Gorge

• Retaining wall construction is underway from late September until late December 2025.
• A 24/7 one-lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions is in place.
• The road will reopen to two lanes over the Christmas/New Years holiday period, then return to one lane in January 2026 when work resumes.
• Completion is expected by late May 2026.

State Highway 1 - Ohaewai

• Monday 8 December to Friday 12 December, during the day, 7am – 5pm
• Due to pre-seal repairs, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.

State Highway 1 – Whangārei to Kawakawa

State Highway 1 – Long Hill, Waiomio

• Monday 6 October to Thursday 18 December, during the day, 7am – 5pm.
• Work resumes on Monday 5 January 2026, with completion expected by early March 2026.
• Due to slip repairs, a southbound crawler lane (left lane) closure in the passing area and speed restrictions are in place. Both northbound and southbound lanes remain open.

State Highway 1 – Akerama

• Monday 20 October to Friday 19 December.
• Work hours: 7am – 6pm.
• Due to road rebuilding in this area, 24/7 lane shifts and speed restrictions are in place.

State Highway 1 – Western Hills Drive near Kensington Sports Park, Whangārei

• Sunday 7 December to Sunday 14 December during the night, 8pm – 5am.
• Due road resurfacing works, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management/temporary traffic lights and speed restrictions will be in place. 

State Highway 1 – Topuni to Whangārei

State Highway 1 - Oakleigh

• Sunday 7 December to Tuesday 9 December, during the night, 8pm – 5am.
• Due to chipsealing work, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.

State Highway 1 - Uretiti

• Sunday 7 December to Friday 12 December, during the night, 8pm – 5am.
• Due to a safety improvement project, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.

State Highway 1 - Waipu

• Tuesday 9 December to Monday 15 December, during the night, 8pm – 5am.
• Due to chipsealing work, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.

State Highway 10

State Highway 10 – north of Oromahoe Road to south of Porotu Road, Oromahoe

• Thursday 20 November to Friday 12 December (drainage works).
• Work hours: during the day, 7am – 6pm
• Due drainage works in preparation for a road rebuild, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management/temporary traffic lights and speed restrictions is in place. 

State Highway 11

No significant works scheduled for this week.

State Highway 12

State Highway 12 – north of Baylys Coast Road, Dargaville

• Monday 10 November to Friday 12 December, during the day, 7am – 6pm.
• Due to road rebuild works, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions is in place.

State Highway 14

No significant works scheduled for this week.

State Highway 15

State Highway 1 – south of Kaikohe

• Monday 8 December to Friday 12 December, during the day, 7am – 5pm
• Due to pre-seal repairs, one lane closure with stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.
