The Memo

Term 1, 2023

Welcome back for Term One!

At MoAD Learning we have been very lucky to have begun our year by presenting professional development workshops, working with incredible teachers. We are feeling inspired for the year ahead and ready to support you!

Our Professional Development program has been expanded for 2023, including Democracy Express PD offerings throughout the year, because we know you're busy! We can't wait to see you at one of our free online Empowering Authentic Student Voice and Agency sessions, or at our Media Literacy TQI Accredited course. We would also like to thank the long list of talented teachers who contributed to our Term 4 TeachMeet last year.

Here at the museum we recently launched two stunning new exhibitions: Behind the Lines and Blueprint. Our Political Cartoons resources have been updated with new content - read on for more details and a sample prompt to use in your classroom.

In this edition we also share some new options for our Digital Workshops, and some fantastic new resources designed to help you connect with your students in these first few weeks as you establish class expectations, get to know each other and embark on exciting new learning adventures!

Wishing you all a fabulous start to the new year,

The MoAD Learning Team

Empowering Student Voice

What are your go-to strategies for empowering student voice in your class? In our People, Power and Making Change on-site program, we ask all year five and six groups about the changes they would like to see. They could be changes in their local community or school, national changes or even global changes. Our museum educators bring these ideas back to the office after each program, where we record them. This allows us to learn from young people, and to investigate how we can keep supporting their ideas in our programming and resources.

Below is a snapshot of the changes some of our groups have discussed with us.

Reflecting on what is important to young people, and how we can support teachers in empowering young people to make positive change is what drives our programming and resource creation.

What small steps might your students take this year to help make the changes they are passionate about? Our Empowering Voice and Agency matrix is a great place to start!

Behind the Lines

Congratulations to this year’s Political Cartoonist of the Year, David Pope, and to all the artists included in this year's outstanding collection.

The launch of MoAD's annual exhibition of political cartoons, Behind the Lines, at the end of 2022 brought us a huge range of cartoons that we know teachers and students are going to love. The cartoons span a range of topics including the Voice to Parliament referendum, Sustainability, the cost of living, and Climate Change, bringing insight and humour around contemporary events from Australia's best political cartoonists.

We think that the benefits of using political cartoons in your classroom are endless! To support you, our Behind the Lines Teacher and Student resources include guides, provocations and activities with carefully selected cartoons that are appropriate for student audiences.

Are you investigating the Voice to Parliament referendum with your students? Try starting with this cartoon from the Tilting towards spring theme, which contains pieces focused on First Nations rights.

Suggested questions: What do you notice about this image? What connections can you make?

'Voice' by Badiucao, The Sydney Morning Herald/The Age, 1 August 2022

Check out our updated resources at MoAD Learning Political Cartoons  and we'd love to meet you in our Media Literacy and Critical Thinking: Political Cartoons professional development course or a Drawn Together Digital Workshop this year too!
