Newsletter Issue #27-44 The Blizzard Before the Playoffs: A Defining Week in WHGBL Dear , 🏀 A Week Like No Other in the WHGBL This past week may go down as one of the most unpredictable weeks in the recent history of the West Hartford Girls Basketball League. Between last Sunday’s unexpected personnel and logistical challenges and what many are calling the “blizzard of the decade,” which closed schools Monday through Wednesday, the league has had to remain agile and resourceful to ensure our players could continue to practice and prepare. Despite the disruptions, our dedicated volunteers, coaches, referees and families worked together to make sure the league kept moving forward. With Juniors Division playoffs beginning this Sunday—including an unprecedented three-team coin flip to determine the top seeds—and the Seniors Division preparing for its final regular season games, the coming days will be some of the most exciting of the season. There is even a chance for more snow tomorrow, so the league will continue monitoring the weather closely. Rest assured, we will do everything possible to keep logistics running as smoothly as possible. There is a great deal of important information in this week’s newsletter—from playoff schedules and event changes to conduct reminders and league opportunities. Please take a few minutes to read the entire newsletter so you are fully prepared for the busy and exciting days ahead. 📰LEAGUE LINESMinors Division – 9:00 AM Game Issues Last SundayThe league wishes to sincerely apologize for the logistical challenges that affected the 9:00 AM Minors Division games last Sunday. Pardon the pun, but it was truly a “perfect storm.” Several key league personnel experienced last-minute emergency situations that prevented them from arriving at Conard High School until approximately 10:00 AM. While the league worked quickly to find replacements, we were unable to fully resolve the issue before the scheduled start time. We want to personally thank the coaches and parents who stepped up and volunteered to ensure the games began on time and that our players could still compete. The Board of Directors met this past Tuesday and discussed additional contingency plans and backup procedures to help ensure situations like this are prevented in the future. Juniors Division Game Referees – Last SundayFor the first time in league history, Juniors Division Head Referee Craig Tanner notified the league that he had come down with a severe cold and could not officiate the Sunday games. I'm happy to report that Craig is feeling better and will be refereeing the Juniors Division games tomorrow. Compounding the issue, the league President was also unable to be present at the scorer’s table that morning. Fortunately, the league was able to rely on our outstanding high school and college referees, who stepped up and officiated the games. Their performance was exceptional. We congratulate these young officials for doing an excellent job under unexpected circumstances and ensuring our players had well-officiated games. Spectator Code of Conduct and DecorumThe league would like to remind spectators of Rule #5 of the Spectator Code of Conduct, which states: “Spectators must respect game officials and refrain from questioning their decisions or addressing them in a disrespectful or abusive manner.” Unfortunately, a few incidents occurred last Sunday during games at Sedgwick Middle School. Our Facility Coordinator addressed the situation at the time, but the league is reviewing the incidents to determine whether any matters should be referred to the league Disciplinary Committee. As we enter the playoff portion of the season, the league will not tolerate abusive conduct toward officials, staff, or volunteers. Click this link to see the full SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT This standard applies equally to coaches in the Minors, Juniors and Seniors Divisions. The integrity and positive culture of the league depend on maintaining respect for everyone involved in the game. Historic Coin Flip Determines Juniors Division Playoff SeedingIn a remarkable display of parity this season, the top three teams in the Juniors Division finished the regular season in a completely unbreakable tie. For the first time in league history, playoff seeding required a triple-team coin flip, conducted in accordance with league rules. Click this link to see a copy of the JUNIORS DIVISION ADDENDUM TO THE NFHS RULES. The results determined the following playoff seeds: 1️⃣ St. John’s – #1 Seed Additional matchups:
All Juniors Division playoff games will take place this Sunday at Sedgwick Middle School. Seniors Division Playoff Schedule Change – March 7Due to the scheduling of conference and state tournaments for the Conard High School Boys and Girls basketball teams, the WHGBL Seniors Division playoff schedule must be adjusted. Originally scheduled for the morning, the games will now be played Saturday afternoon, March 7. New schedule:
⚠️ Important: All playoff times remain subject to change depending on high school tournament schedules and gymnasium availability. The league will notify families immediately if additional adjustments become necessary. Click this link for access to see the current JUNIORS AND SENIORS DIVISION PLAYOFF SCHEDULE. Skills Competition Time Change – March 7Due to the same high school scheduling conflicts, the WHGBL Skills Competition will now begin immediately after the final Seniors Division playoff game. Expected timeline: 🏀 Start: Approximately 3:00 PM Players should arrive in uniform and ready to participate. Important Awards Policy If a player wins a trophy or medal, she must be present at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday, March 8 to receive it. The ceremony takes place between the Seniors Division Championship and the Juniors Division Championship. The league does not deliver trophies, and no one may collect an award on behalf of a player. Players must be present to receive their trophy. NO EXCEPTIONS. Click this link to see information about the SKILLS COMPETITION. Food Drive ResultsA sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to the town-wide basketball food drive supporting the West Hartford Food Pantry. The collection was a tremendous success and demonstrated the generosity of our league families. Your efforts will help many neighbors and families facing food insecurity in our community. We are incredibly proud of the WHGBL community for stepping up to help others. Board Expansion OpportunitiesThe league is currently seeking volunteers interested in expanding our Board of Directors in several important areas: • Assistant Secretary If you are interested in serving the league and helping us continue to improve the experience for our players, please contact the League President. Our league thrives because of volunteers who are willing to contribute their time and talents. 🏀COACHES’ CORNERMinors Division – Curbing Aggressive PlayLeague officials observed overly aggressive play in several Minors Division games last week. Because the Minors Division does not have bonus free throws, it is particularly important that coaches emphasize proper defensive positioning and spacing rather than physical play. Coaches should instruct players to spread the floor and avoid clustering around the ball to reduce unnecessary contact. Juniors Division – Playoff Conduct ExpectationsWith playoffs beginning Sunday, officials have been instructed to be more sensitive to inappropriate behavior directed at referees. Officials will issue warnings and technical fouls when necessary to enforce the Coaches Code of Ethics and maintain proper court decorum. Even during high-pressure playoff games, coaches should focus exclusively on coaching their players and maintaining sportsmanship. Seniors Division – Press and Zone Defense RulesSeniors Division coaches are reminded of the following rule: In the second half of games, teams may implement: • A full court press However, these strategies may not be used if the team is leading by 15 points or more. This rule helps ensure competitive balance while still allowing teams to adjust strategically during games. ⚖️RULES REMINDERThe league has received questions from spectators about timeouts across divisions. Here is a quick overview: Minors Division • One timeout per team per game Juniors Division • One timeout per team per half Seniors Division • One timeout per team per half Our scorer’s table crews do an excellent job tracking timeouts during games. 🌟SPONSOR’S SPOTLIGHTThe West Hartford Girls Basketball League would not be possible without the generous support of our community sponsors. We encourage all families to support the businesses that support our players. Seniors Division Sponsors • Common Good Home Buyers Juniors Division Sponsors • HARP Home Services Please consider patronizing these businesses and thanking them for supporting girls basketball in West Hartford. 💭PARTING PERSPECTIVESThis week has been a reminder of how resilient and dedicated the WHGBL community truly is. Despite weather disruptions, unexpected personnel challenges, and scheduling changes, our players, coaches, referees, volunteers and families came together to keep the league moving forward. As we enter the most exciting stretch of the season—with Juniors Division playoffs beginning Sunday and the Seniors Division wrapping up its regular season—we encourage everyone to come out and support our players. Playoff basketball is always special, and the effort and sportsmanship displayed by our athletes deserve a full gym and enthusiastic support.
