Crucial conservation project breaks ground with Traditional Owners

A crucial conservation initiative, the Restoration of Reef Islands Project, is collaborating closely with Traditional Owners to enhance the resilience of Great Barrier Reef’s islands. By working together to assess and restore critical habitats, the project aims to strengthen islands’ ability to withstand climate change impacts and other threats, safeguarding the long-term health of these wonderfully biodiverse ecosystems. Twenty years of zoning

This year marks 20 years since the introduction of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Zoning Plan. The zoning plan immediately resulted in far greater protection for the world heritage listed area – increasing the no-take area from five to 33 per cent.

Scientific Consensus Statement released (C) Commonwealth of Australia: Reef Authority

Major Reef water quality report released

The most comprehensive and rigorous review of the effects of land-based activities on the Reef's water quality and ecosystem condition has been released. The 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement was released this month, bringing together decades of peer reviewed research and evidence to understand how land-based activities are affecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Future fishing position statement released

The Reef Authority has released our Position Statement on Sustainable Fisheries, which outlines our commitment to ecologically sustainable fisheries and fish populations and sets the standard to maintain a healthy ecosystem and a functioning Reef – now, and for the future.

Long-Term Monitoring Program results released

The Australian Institute of Marine Science has released its Long-Term Monitoring Program annual report. The Long-Term Monitoring Program surveys between 80 and 130 Reefs along the length and breadth of the Reef – and has done so for nearly four decades – resulting in the most comprehensive and extensive record of coral status on any reef ecosystem in the world.

TUMRA team visits Rapa Nui, Chile

Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements (TUMRA) team lead Jason Ramsamy recently visited Rapa Nui in Chile, to present and promote the Reef Authority's TUMRA and Sea Country Values mapping activities. The visit was not only beneficial for sharing information, but helped strengthen relationships between the Reef Authority and National Park practitioners in Chile.

Ready, Chopper, Dr Croc

Mark Read boasts a bevy of nicknames. Among them, 'Ready' is standard fare, as is 'Chopper' thanks to his notorious former namesake made famous in a popular 2000 Australian film. But to his colleagues at the Reef Authority, the Director of Field Management Strategy is the unassuming 'Doctor Croc', a pioneering backcountry biologist who once harboured dreams of becoming a chef!

At the Reef Authority, we're excited to celebrate all things reef science this National Science Week, running from 10 - 18 August. Our management of the Reef is underpinned by science, and through initiatives like Reef Guardian Schools, we seek to inspire the next generation of Reef Stewards.
