Above: Future motorway to motorway connections

What’s coming up in 2023?

It’s an exciting year for Aucklanders who will soon be able to enjoy a more reliable journey time when the Western Ring Route is completed, along with greater transport choice for how they get around once an additional 7km of shared paths open.

In the past few months, we’ve opened up an additional southbound lane between Greville Road and Constellation Drive (Sept 2022) followed by an additional northbound lane between Greville Road and Oteha Valley Road (Dec 2022). This month, we’ve opened an additional two northbound lanes between Constellation Drive and Greville Road and more lanes will open on SH1 as we continue our asphalt programme in the coming months.

This asphalt work is necessary in advance of the opening of the SH18 to SH1 direct motorway connection, which is the first of two final stages in the completion of the Western Ring Route. This connection is scheduled to open in late February, followed by the SH1 to SH18 underpass in the following months. Construction of the underpass is nearly finished, and work will then focus on the commissioning process which needs to be undertaken before it can safely open. Check out the map above to see how the completion of the Western Ring Route will change how you travel through the area.

Rain, rain, go away

It’s been an unseasonably rainy start to summer which has disrupted our asphalt programme. Laying asphalt requires fine weather conditions with no rain so we can maintain the correct temperature of the asphalt and it can be compacted properly and ensure adhesion. The more it rains, the less asphalt we are able to lay on the state highway network.

More opportunities to explore the North Shore on foot or bike

At the end of last year, nearly 4km’s of shared path in the Unsworth Heights and Rosedale industrial area on Auckland’s North Shore opened to the community, helping make it safer for locals to get around on foot, scooter or by bike. We caught up with some of the people enjoying the path to hear what they had to say.
