Business Excellence Awards 2019 - Manufacturing and Distribution Winners - STASH

Kia ora ,

This week I’m writing to the Minister of Immigration to ask the Government to think differently about the current process to support businesses in finding the staff they need to run their business.

I often hear a lot about the rising cost of doing business, rising wages, and the lack of staff to meet business production demands. One business recently said to me they would take on 20 people tomorrow if they could get the right skilled people. Next week, as part of the Chamber’s Education to Employment work we have created an employment event where Year 13 students leaving school will have the opportunity to talk to employers with jobs. But there needs to be more emphasis on other options.

The letter to the Minister will ask him to think differently about this problem. One thing I will be asking is how immigration could be linked to the training with young people you are already doing. Many of you are supporting young people every day, by helping young people to discover, explore, connect, and experience their future pathways. We love this about the Hutt Valley. So my suggestion is to link the ability to bring skilled people through the immigration system with training our young New Zealanders.

If you have stories, ideas, or feedback you would like me to include in my letter please send them to me at patrick@hvchamber.org.nz or 021 248 1203.

NATIONAL UPDATE

One-off National Public Holiday

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

To mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Government has announced a one-off national public holiday, to take place on Monday 26 September 2022.

This means that normal Public Holiday requirements under the Holidays Act will apply. You can find out more about what to consider for your business here:

Shop trading restrictions will not apply on this public holiday. Shops may open (and apply the normal rules for employees who work on a public holiday).

COVID-19: New Guidance

COVID-19 - New Guidance

The COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic light system) has been replaced by a simplified set of rules and guidelines to protect you, your staff and your customers from COVID-19.

Isolation and testing

  • Only people who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate for seven days.
  • Household contacts are recommended to take a rapid antigen test every day for five days. So long as they test negative, they will be able to go about daily life as normal.

Face masks

  • Masks will not be required anywhere, except when visiting certain healthcare facilities like hospitals, GPs, pharmacies and aged care residential facilities.
  • Some places like workplaces or marae may ask people to wear a mask. Masks are recommended in confined places such as public transport or when visiting vulnerable people.

Vaccination mandates

  • All remaining Government vaccine mandates will now end. The last workforce with a Government vaccine mandate is health and disability workers. This will end on 11:59pm, 26 September 2022.
  • Some employers may still require workers to be vaccinated due to their responsibilities under health and safety legislation.

RIVERLINK

Progress on RiverLink Consents Welcomed

Progress on RiverLink Consents Welcomed

The Environment Court has issued an interim decision on approving a range of resource consent applications for RiverLink, delivering a high level of confidence in the project.

The Court's interim decision is comprehensive at 186 pages.  It focuses largely on the proposed conditions, especially in relation to noise and vibration, and cycling and walking matters.  It seeks that further work is done on the conditions and that the applicants report back finally to the Court on 30 September.  Thereafter the Court will confirm the conditions.
