![]() Kia ora , This week I’m writing to the Minister of Immigration to ask the Government to think differently about the current process to support businesses in finding the staff they need to run their business. I often hear a lot about the rising cost of doing business, rising wages, and the lack of staff to meet business production demands. One business recently said to me they would take on 20 people tomorrow if they could get the right skilled people. Next week, as part of the Chamber’s Education to Employment work we have created an employment event where Year 13 students leaving school will have the opportunity to talk to employers with jobs. But there needs to be more emphasis on other options. The letter to the Minister will ask him to think differently about this problem. One thing I will be asking is how immigration could be linked to the training with young people you are already doing. Many of you are supporting young people every day, by helping young people to discover, explore, connect, and experience their future pathways. We love this about the Hutt Valley. So my suggestion is to link the ability to bring skilled people through the immigration system with training our young New Zealanders. If you have stories, ideas, or feedback you would like me to include in my letter please send them to me at patrick@hvchamber.org.nz or 021 248 1203.
