Petone to Grenada

April update

23 April 2026

Thank you for meeting with us

Thank you to everyone who attended our community information sessions held in Newlands and Petone during March. It was great to see more than 500 residents, business owners and community members take the time to attend and learn more about the project.

We appreciated the opportunity to share updates, and our project specialists were able to explain the preferred route, design development, planning processes and indicative timeframes in more detail, and respond to your questions. Many of you told us you found it helpful to talk with the project team and gain a clearer understanding of how the project is progressing and next steps.

We are preparing a summary of the key topics discussed which will be published in the coming weeks.

If you were unable to attend you'll find the information shared on our project website, including our latest maps.

Share your feedback

We are interested in your thoughts about the project. To complete our short online survey, follow this link. Be sure to submit your response early, as the link will close in late-May 2026.

Preferred route update

Following further investigations and technical assessments, the Petone to Grenada preferred route no longer includes Riddlers Crescent as part of the proposed connection between Pito-One Road and Hutt Road. Instead, the route proposes to include Hector Street, affecting the south side of the street.

A more detailed traffic assessment will be completed as part of developing the project's application under the Fast-track Approvals Act.

Recreation survey in Newlands

An independent recreation research company is carrying out a recreation survey on behalf of the project this month to strengthen our understanding of recreation in the area.

The survey is gathering information about how tracks and parks around Newlands are currently used. This information will support technical assessments of potential effects associated with the project.

You may see surveyors located at:

  • Seton Nossiter Park picnic area.
  • On tracks in Gilberd Bush Reserve.
  • A track within the Waihinahina and Dennis Duggan Reserve.

Signs will be placed near survey locations to let people know surveying is underway, and surveying will take place between 7.30am and 7.00pm, although not every day and depending on weather conditions.

Geotechnical and ecology investigations update

We’re approaching the final stages of our geotechnical and ecological investigations programme along the preferred route. Over recent months, our teams have been testing soil and ground conditions, surveying vegetation and monitoring wildlife activity. This work helps us build our knowledge of the local environment. We appreciate your cooperation in observing the signs and notices around the area, which helps us complete this work safely and with minimal disruption.

The information gathered will help refine planning and design, assess impacts and effects, and support the project's Fast-track application which we're aiming to lodge in October 2026.
