Local History Exhibitions
The jaws were donated to the Local Studies collection in 2010 by the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club.
These Tiger Shark jaws come from a shark killed off Bondi Beach in the 1930s by surf life saver Rothe Bassingthwaighte, a member of the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club. The shark was killed with a hand-held harpoon thrown from a surf boat. It is not known how long this shark was, but the Australian Museum estimates it to have been several metres in length. Despite the widespread fear of sharks, there have been only 12 recorded shark attacks in Bondi’s history, two of them fatal. The fatal shark attacks occurred within a month of each other in early 1929.
