Your update from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

Welcome to the October project update for the three Waka Kotahi intersection improvement projects in Northland being delivered as part of the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme. This newsletter provides regular news and information about the projects.

These projects address key challenges for our regional state highway networks, including safety risks, resilience and congestion problems, accessibility and travel time reliability. The projects also support regional economic development.

Work progresses (at left) on SH10 while traffic uses temporary roading, September 2020

Temporary roading switch made at Puketona

Traffic on SH10 and SH11 has been switched successfully onto a new temporary intersection, allowing traffic to flow while we make intersection improvements.

Safe areas for workers constructing the new roundabout have been created behind temporary steel safety barriers separating traffic on the temporary roading from our work activity. Businesses at the intersection remain open and we will ensure access to their premises is maintained throughout construction.

The emergency closure of SH1 in the Mangamuka Gorge continues to have an impact on SH10 traffic volumes through Puketona Junction. We have adjusted work plans to avoid contributing to travel delays on the highway, including limiting the times of day we use stop/go traffic control.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623. Road users can also contact Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency at any time on 0800 44 44 49.

Earthworks in progress at intersection of SH1 and SH11, October 2020

Changes evident at Kawakawa intersection

The Kawakawa intersection of SH1 and SH11 looks a bit different now with earthworks shaping the corner hillside and traffic successfully switched over to a temporary intersection. This means traffic will continue to flow through the site while we do some major construction work.

We were working at night recently installing stormwater piping under the state highway. This work was initially planned for November, but we have made efficiency gains by moving it up the schedule.

For the next phase, we are now focusing on vegetation clearance, stormwater piping and the new retaining wall. This work will contribute to improving visibility for drivers and improving the hillside's appearance.

If you have any concerns or queries about upcoming works, please call Mel Norris from Fulton Hogan on 0800 577 623.

Rawene intersection to include new safety barrier

Plans for improvements to the intersection of SH12 and Rawene Road include a new safety barrier along the state highway.

The barrier forms part of our safe system approach aimed at reducing the risk of death and serious injury at state highway intersections.

Construction for the project is scheduled to be completed by December 2020.
