Juristalks: Smuggling Law: Unsettled Sovereignties in Turkey’s Kurdish BorderlandsPlease join the Department of Law and Legal Studies for their Juristalks event featuring University of Toronto Anthropology Prof. Firat Bozçali. This in-person event will be held on March 10 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at D492 Loeb Building. The Kurdish-populated Wan/Van Province is a major smuggling hub between Turkey and Iran. Kurdish smugglers cross this 180-mile-long land border, transporting everyday consumer goods—fuel, tobacco, sugar, and tea—as well as legally banned items. In Smuggling Law, Fırat Bozçali attends to this terrain and highlights the criminal court as a key arena where borders and claims of sovereignty are simultaneously remade and disrupted. |
Michael Bell Annual Lecture: Israel’s Zero Sum Endgame for Palestinians – Can Middle Powers Make a Difference?The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs presents the Michael Bell Annual Lecture on the Middle East, held in honour of the late Professor Michael Bell. This in-person event will be held on March 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 270-274 Teraanga Commons. This year’s speaker is Daniel Levy, President of the U.S./Middle East Project (USMEP) and a former advisor in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office who participated in Israeli–Palestinian peace negotiations. Levy brings decades of policy and diplomatic experience to this timely discussion. |

Job Opportunity: Anti-Black Racism Education Program CoordinatorCarleton's Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities is looking to hire a graduate student to facilitate its Anti-Black Racism Education Program. The coordinator will lead the delivery of workshops and presentations to students, staff and faculty. The goal of the program is to increase awareness of anti-Black racism and build skills to mitigate its impact on Carleton community members. In addition to facilitating workshops, the coordinator will be responsible for expanding the program and developing a comprehensive collection of educational resources and materials. Some nominal and related administrative services will also be provided as part of this function. Qualifications:

Carleton University chemistry researcher Kate Marczenko has been awarded the prestigious John Charles Polanyi Prize for her groundbreaking research in advanced functional materials and crystalline systems.
Marczenko is one of five early-career researchers in Ontario to receive the Polanyi Prize this year.
