Led by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the program partners with councils to support local action on climate change, water quality, waste reduction, habitat restoration, and community engagement. Council Environment and Sustainability spokesperson Cr Zane O’Keefe said joining the program reinforced Council’s commitment to being a resilient and environmentally responsible region. Sea Country Connections Green turtle researchFor millennia, the Meriam Nation people of the eastern Torres Strait have shared a deep spiritual and cultural connection with green turtles – an important totem woven into their identity, island custom and stewardship of their Sea Country. To help safeguard green turtles for future generations, Meriam Nation Traditional Owners are working alongside scientists and government agencies through the Great Barrier Reef Green Turtle Research Program.Noah’s Ark on the ReefThe extraordinary behind-the-scenes mission to rehome hundreds of marine creatures, from sharks to reef fish and living corals, has been hailed as one of the biggest living coral reef aquarium relocations in the world. The massive logistical operation to relocate Townsville’s Great Barrier Reef Aquarium and the ongoing care for the animals has been revealed as part of the $180m redevelopment of the facility, due to reopen in 2029. Hooked on sustainability with Rob PaxevanosJoin us for a conversation with Rob Paxevanos, host of Fishing Australia, as we dive into what it means to fish smarter, not harder, on the Great Barrier Reef. Rob shares practical, easy-to-use tips for recreational fishers on gear choice, bait, and fishing techniques that help protect the Reef’s delicate ecosystems. Trevor's journey to the ReefTrevor Floyd always felt the pull of the ocean, despite growing up a long way from it. Raised in Michigan, a landlocked US state, Trevor’s closest saltwater experiences came from family road trips to the Florida coast and the hum of saltwater aquariums that quickly took over his bedroom. “Saltwater tanks were my thing. I was always fascinated by the coral, how delicate and complex those little systems were,” Trevor said. Marine Park collaboration patrol protectsA total of 1,109 targeted compliance patrols across the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in a year have worked to protect the Reef and deter illegal activity, protect biodiversity and uphold zoning rules. Marine Parks have been proven to protect biodiversity and boost fish stocks in open waters – delivering benefits well beyond no-take zones Certified greenThe Reef Authority’s new head office at Stanley Place, Townsville, officially achieved a 6-star Green Star Interiors certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.
