President's MessageRenee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP (Feline), President
Lately I’ve been having a lot of extra stress, quite a few nights with less sleep, and a general feeling of being stretched a bit thin. I’m confident that if you can’t relate to that at the moment, you still know exactly how that feels. I find myself starting to dwell on the negative - people missing deadlines, pet owners not following instructions, staff members making mistakes. I take it for granted when things go the way they are supposed to, and get frustrated when they don’t. If I can remember to take a minute before reacting, it’s easier to see just how much is actually ok. But damn - that’s hard sometimes.
One of my favorite quotes is from the legendary Pat Summitt, who said attitude is a choice. It sounds so simple, but can be so very challenging. In my daily world, that usually means taking a deep breath, and resetting myself. So what if one client was difficult; I have 12 more awesome clients coming in. Does it really matter that an employee restocked things differently than the last time? I should be grateful that things got restocked at all (I know you know what I mean). Traffic is really bad going home; I have extra time to listen to my podcast. Attitude is a choice.
Here’s a big one for me: I can’t figure out what’s wrong with this patient. It’s easy to get caught up in that, drown in imposter syndrome, and decide to change careers to something where it’s not so easy to screw up. My attitude switch - contacting another ABVP Diplomate to talk it out. Looking at the listserv and knowing that I have a whole group of people who are there to support me. This camaraderie is what ABVP is to me. It’s pretty rare that I don’t feel better about things after I’ve consulted with you brilliant colleagues. And I love when someone reaches out to me, too. Are we using this community the way we should? Are we getting stronger together? If you haven’t been part of journal club discussions, or part of the RVS listservs, why not? I encourage you to take advantage of the unique situation we have as ABVP Diplomates,
and let us all lighten each other’s loads.
Kind of along those lines, starting Tuesday, September 26 we’ll have our first Pints with the President event (Register to Attend HERE). Grab a beverage of your choice, and meet up online for a chat about what’s currently being discussed within ABVP leadership, or ask whatever questions you may have, or just hang out with the coolest specialists around. And me. I’ll be there, too.
See you later this month.
