How to identify if your compost needs rescuing from any unwanted guests. The most common guests you’re likely to find in your compost are cockroaches, ants, and black soldier fly larvae. While these guests are sometimes considered pests, they all play an important role in composting organic matter. They typically work in harmony – its only when one species threatens another that issues will arise. The over-abundance of these guests can be caused by several reasons – see below to how to best manage these situations if they were to arise: Compost is too dry: Chopping up your waste prior to putting it in your worm farm or compost bin will make it easier to stir in – making sure it is moist and not too dry which often brings ants. Add some damp newspaper and aerate your compost and they should move along quickly! Keep the lid sealed properly: Keeping food scraps in an airtight container from the kitchen to the compost will prevent fruit flies from getting into compost. Ensuring that fresh scraps are mixed in correctly, so flies are less likely to seek them out! Know when to stop feeding the system: Maggots and other larvae will eat scraps faster than worms, to make sure they don’t overtake the system completely, stop adding scraps and add dry carbon, this includes shredded newspaper, leaves, and dried grass clippings.
