Happy New Year! While many were perfecting their BBQ skills over summer, our team were busy making solid progress on Te Ara Tupua.

See what we’ve been up to and what’s coming next in this month’s project update.

Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One update

Following completion of the revetment and seawalls last year, our team made significant progress over the December/January period, particularly at the bridge to take advantage of the planned KiwiRail shutdowns.

During this time, all of the bridge steel was lifted into place and the concrete deck and kerbing has now been installed (making it safe to walk over it).

Along the rest of the alignment we’ve continued with the fencing, utility trenching, electrical works, drainage and Ūranga construction.

Our pavement and surfacing work is also in progress (but is weather dependent).

In Honiana Te Puni Reserve it is really starting to take shape, with landscaping and shaping earthworks continuing.

We’d like to shout out the mahi of our contractors who’ve been working day and night to help this project progress.

Check out the photos below.

Offshore habitats supporting marine life

It's great to see the two offshore islands supporting a diversity of marine life. Designed to provide a habitat for fish and a surface for algae and shellfish to grow on, there's now lush canopies of kelp, various fish and other sealife below the surface. They also continue to provide space for a range of coastal birds to roost away from our construction.

Pavement and cultural narrative

The Niho Taniwha artwork, created for Te Ara Tupua by Iwi Lead Designer Len Hetet, serves as more than just an aesthetic, it's a symbol of protection. On this shared path, it acts as a visual kaitiaki (guardian) to guide journeys. When you see this tauira (pattern), be aware of your surroundings as it marks transition points where other users are entering or exiting.

Looking ahead

The 2026 construction programme is officially underway and while most of the significant construction work is complete, our team will be focusing on:

  • installing the bridge balustrade, associated services and other bridge finishing works
  • completing the fencing, utilities and other infrastructure such as lighting and CCTV
  • completing the paving and surfacing, painting the line marking, and installing signs and other finishing items such as artwork and cultural features along the alignment
  • completing work in Honiana Te Puni Reserve.

As you can see we have a lot to do over the next few months. We expect work to wrap up in the second quarter of 2026.

People of the project

With more than 20 years of experience — many of them spent delivering marine infrastructure projects across New Zealand — Saab is a valued and exceptionally hard‑working member of our team.

He is grateful for the opportunities this project has offered so far. While some days can be especially demanding and require meticulous attention to detail, Saab sees this project as a true career highlight — particularly the chance to contribute to the architecturally designed shared‑user bridge at Ngā Ūranga.

Saab recognises the power of having good people around him and a strong, well‑structured work plan. He knows these are the foundations of delivering a project to a high standard. He also has deep respect for his colleagues and appreciates the opportunity to learn from them and share his own knowledge in return.

Looking ahead, Saab is excited to see people walking and cycling along Te Ara Tupua in the not‑too‑distant future.
