Roadworks update

State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, 10 nights for urgent works and maintenance in September

Please note that an extended period of night closures is needed for urgent work on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill in addition to the scheduled 5-night maintenance closure starting Sunday 3 September. The road will close to stabilise an area where the roadside above a gully has slumped.

The Remutaka Hill will close for 10 nights in September 2023:

• 9pm Sunday 3 September to 4am Friday 8 September
• 9pm Sunday 10 September to 4am Friday 15 September

Light vehicles can be escorted at intervals across the hill behind a pilot vehicle. Bookings are essential and should be made in advance.

• For Sunday, please book by 4pm the Friday before.  Monday to Thursday, please book by 4pm on the day at customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz.
• Provide your mobile number, car rego and make for the Bookings Register
• Crossings timetable: Hutt to Featherston 10.30pm and 12.30am (22:30 and 00:30). Featherston to Hutt 11.30pm and 1.30am (23:30 and 01:30).

Numbers are strictly limited and travellers turning up without a booking risk being turned away or having to wait at the closure point for the next opportunity. If you have a genuine emergency on the night, the hill manager will decide how best to help you. Any additions to an escorted crossing are at the discretion of the hill manager who must consider the safety of workers and travellers on the night.

Access will be available for 'flashing light' emergency services throughout the closures.

We understand the closures may inconvenience some road users and thank you for your patience and understanding as we carry out this essential maintenance work.

These regular night closures significantly reduce the number of disruptions at other times for road users. Road crews can complete a large amount of work safely during these closures because multiple crews can work across the hill simultaneously without disrupting traffic.

Update on slump site, Featherston side of Remutaka Hill

• Physical work starts the week of 28 August to stabilise the slump and hillside below the road.
• Piles will be driven down to solid rock and a retaining wall constructed.
• Night work under a road closure is needed because of the size of equipment required for various aspects of the project.
• Other work will continue through the day with 24/7 stop/go traffic control for at least 6 weeks.
