Parents newsletter - June 2024

 

Summer courses are in full swing! In June, students enrolled in early summer courses will write final exams, while those taking full summer courses will have mid-terms.  

Fall and winter registration is approaching, and students are making important academic decisions. Carleton’s academic advisors and Student Registration Assistance team are available to assist your Raven with course selection, major or minor designations, understanding academic audits and much more!

 

Important Dates and Deadlines

Tuesday, June 18, 2024: Last day of early summer classes.

Wednesday, June 19, 2024: Final summer term payment deadline. 

Friday, June 21 to Thursday, June 27, 2024: Final examinations in early summer courses and mid-term examinations in full summer courses will be held. 

Monday, July 1, 2024: Statutory holiday. University closed.

Celebrating Convocation with the Class of 2024 

Carleton University will celebrate the accomplishments of 2024 graduates with in-person convocation ceremonies from Monday, June 17 to Friday, June 21, 2024. 

The complete ceremony schedule, along with information for graduates, is available on the Convocation website.  

 

Celebrating National Indigenous History Month 

During National Indigenous History Month, Carleton is celebrating the rich and diverse cultures, voices and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people who are positively impacting the world.

Celebrating Pride Month 

June is Pride Month and it is another opportunity to celebrate and support Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer members of the Carleton community.

Fall/Winter 2024-2025 Class Schedule 

The fall/winter 2024-2025 class schedule and registration course planning tool is available in Carleton Central (access by logging into Carleton360). Registration begins based on time-tickets on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 for new first year students and Tuesday, July 9, 2024 for returning students.  

Your Raven’s exact time-ticket will be available on Carleton Central approximately one week preceding the registration time period.  

 

Student Registration Assistance Team 

Does your student need help registering for courses? The Student Registration Assistance (SRA) team is available to help students build a conflict free timetable, navigate Carleton Central and provide general registration assistance. Your Raven can visit the SRA team at the Registrar’s Office on the third floor of Tory Building, or contact the team via phone at 613-520-3500 or email registrar@carleton.ca. 

 

Safer in the Sun: Tips for Safer Substance Use this Summer 

Planning ahead and following Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines are just a couple of ways for students to reduce harm and be safer during this summer’s patio and party season. Visit the Current Students website for tips on how your Raven can reduce harm and stay safe this summer.  

The Mental Health and Wellness website also contains useful information on both Carleton-specific and public resources for people who use substances, are questioning their substance use or have a substance use disorder.

Too Good to Be True? How to Spot a Fraudulent Job Posting or Recruitment Effort  

Is this a job scam? Is it too good to be true? The answer in most cases is yes. If someone wants to hire your student right away and send them money for doing nothing, then it's a scam.    

Share these 10 warning signs with your student to help protect them from fraudulent practices when job hunting.

First Year Connections - Peer Mentorship Program 

The first few weeks of university are filled with plenty of exciting opportunities and experiences.  Peer mentors can help connect first year students with university resources, answer their questions and help them get involved on campus.  

First Year Connections Peer Mentors provide great resources and support for incoming first year students to help them achieve a great start here at Carleton. Placements are limited—encourage your student to register today. 

 

Faculty Leadership Updates 

Dr. Anne Bowker has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences effective Monday, July 1, 2024. Dr. Bowker has served as Interim Dean since August 2023. 

Dr. Larry Kostiuk has announced his intention to seek a second term as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design. An advisory committee is seeking input as part of the renewal process, inviting the community to share their comments and views on the Provost’s website by end of day on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
