Safety improvements make headway

Stage 1 of the State Highway 58 Safety Improvements Project is progressing with traffic management in place between Haywards Interchange and Mount Cecil Road.

The main focus of the work so far includes:
• vegetation clearance
• building access tracks
• installing environmental controls.

We’ve removed some of the vegetation that needs to be cleared, and the team has installed a key culvert. We’ve also started work on the pavement areas that will form part of the widened road.

Weather batters Haywards

The bad weather that swept through the region over the first weekend of summer caused some damage to the site. We’ve been assessing how this will affect the project but there’s a chance we’ll need to repair some areas and do further work in others.

There was a significant amount of flooding at the Pauatahanui end of SH58 and around the fill site by Flightys Road. Some of the neighbouring streets also suffered slips and debris as a result of the weather. The construction crew is working with local authorities to help with the clean-up.

Iwi bless project ahead of construction

Ngāti Toa kaumātua, led by rūnanga head Taku Parai, recently held a blessing at the foot of Haywards Hill. The blessing came in the lead-up to Stage 1 of construction work starting.

Iwi were joined by the construction crew and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency staff for the ceremony, which called for spiritual guidance and protection over the project.

“It was a pleasure to be there for the blessing of this project. We’re really grateful to Ngāti Toa,” said Chris Nally, Project Manager.

“This is a very important project for us and the community, so the support we're receiving from iwi is greatly appreciated."

Locals enjoy a barbecue

Downer recently had the pleasure of hosting a barbecue with some of the local community. It was a chance for the work crew and locals to get to know each other, as well as an opportunity to discuss the project.

They really enjoyed meeting everyone and are looking forward to hosting more events in the future.

Construction stops over Christmas break

Construction on the Stage 1 of the SH58 safety improvements, between the Haywards Interchange and Mt Cecil Rd, has shut down for the Christmas/New Year period.

During the shutdown traffic management remains in place, with the 50km speed limit and a single lane each way.

Work on the safety improvements is progressing well with the construction team back on board in the New Year on Monday 6 January.
