Holiday break for crews, smoother travel for youEver heard of the term ‘moratorium’? Officially it’s a temporary suspension or delay of an activity, obligation, or law. Here at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), we use it as a formal pause of road working activity to give everyone unobstructed travel over holiday period. There may be some temporary traffic management on the road to keep worksites safe over the Christmas break. It’s also a good chance for our hard-working crews to have some well-earned downtime. The Christmas moratorium starts at midday Friday 19 December 2025 and ends at midnight Sunday 4 January 2026. Thank you all for your patience over this season, make the most of the moratorium, enjoy the holiday period, drive safely and we will see you back in 2026! |

Booze maths doesn't add upThe festive season and long summer days have arrived, along with a new drink driving campaign to remind us all to celebrate and socialise safely. A collaboration between NZTA and NZ Police, the new campaign targets 18-39-years old males and shines a light on the unreliable ‘booze maths’ they might do to justify driving after they’ve started drinking. The campaign promotes getting a sober ride home and reminds the audience that you might go through a NZ Police checkpoint on your way home. The advertising will be on a range of broadcast and online channels and in drinking environments like bars and sports clubs. You can watch the new ad here. |

Holiday hustle: SH2 Passing lanes on vacationAs the summer break is fast approaching, NZTA reminds everyone to plan ahead for safe, enjoyable trips using our real time summer holidays journey planner. It’s as important as ever to drive to the conditions, allow extra time and take regular breaks to stay alert. Like previous years, the passing lanes on State Highway 2 (SH2), between Pōkeno and the State Highway 25 (SH25) Mangatarata roundabout, will be closed during peak times to ensure smoother traffic flows. The eastbound passing lanes will be closed on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December between 6am and 8pm. Westbound lanes will be closed on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 January between 6am and 8pm. Queues might be a little longer when the passing lanes are closed, but there will be minimal impact on your journey time. |
