Click here Cotton Matters Cotton Australia’s Chair and CEO have returned from a trip to India sponsored by the Indian Ministry of Textiles and the Australian government where they met key officials including senior Ministers and trade officials about the potential for increased free trade with Australian cotton growers. Nigel Burnett and Adam Kay were invited to travel to India with the Free Trade Agreement central to meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai. One of the highlights was attending the global textile event Bharat Tex in New Delhi, which was opened by hugely popular Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another key event was a meeting with senior government minister Piyush Goyal who is the Minister for Textiles, highlighting the importance of textiles to India. One of the most topical but arguably most misunderstood developments in sustainable agriculture, carbon baseline setting will be a focus in two weeks at the Bayer Cotton Grower of the Year Field Day. The theme of the day is ‘Nature and Numbers’ and the speakers include the winner of the AgriRisk High Achiever of the Year Skerman Farming. Dan Skerman will speak about the importance of data but also his experiences with carbon baseline assessments. Born into a Queensland cotton farming family, Annie Henwood draws on her background and experiences to positively impact mental health for rural Australians. A resident of Toobeah, west of Goondiwindi, Annie launched her podcast series, "Pieces of the Mind," in 2021, and has since released 30 episodes. The podcast, propelled by Annie's passion for improving mental health delves into raw and emotive stories, offering a platform for diverse voices and perspectives. Cotton Australia Chair Nigel Burnett has praised the efforts of well-known Queensland cotton farmers Nigel and Vanessa Corish and their family for being recognised as the Weekly Times Farmer of the Year. Senior Policy Manager for Northern Australia Simone Cameron has taken advantage of key opportunities recently to educate Territorians about the possibilities for the expansion of cotton crops in the NT. The work being undertaken by the Cotton to Market team has been captured as part of a podcast - reaching an audience of more than 40,000 people. Cotton to Market’s Brooke Summers and Ashley Hollis were interviewed for the Fashion Business Mindset podcast where they detailed their work with major brands and retailers who have applied to use the Australian Cotton Mark. Cotton Australia Education Manager, Jenny Hughes, joined the Junior Judging Day in Blayney. The event, which was organised by NSW DPI, was held just before the Blayney Ag Show and brought together 140 high school Ag students from Bathurst, Orange, and nearby areas. We are delighted to announce Samuel Lee is the recipient of the Cotton Industry’s Scholarship for Course 31 of the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP). Sam is an Extension and Development Manager for Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia for Cotton Seed Distributors supporting the burgeoning cotton industry in northern Australia. Applications are open for the Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program which supports women in agriculture to elevate their leadership through mentorship, networking, and industry partnerships.
