Cotton Australia in Key Free Trade meetings in India

Cotton Australia’s Chair and CEO have returned from a trip to India sponsored by the Indian Ministry of Textiles and the Australian government where they met key officials including senior Ministers and trade officials about the potential for increased free trade with Australian cotton growers.

Nigel Burnett and Adam Kay were invited to travel to India with the Free Trade Agreement central to meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai.

One of the highlights was attending the global textile event Bharat Tex in New Delhi, which was opened by hugely popular Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  Another key event was a meeting with senior government minister Piyush Goyal who is the Minister for Textiles, highlighting the importance of textiles to India.

One of the most topical but arguably most misunderstood developments in sustainable agriculture, carbon baseline setting will be a focus in two weeks at the Bayer Cotton Grower of the Year Field Day.

The theme of the day is ‘Nature and Numbers’ and the speakers include the winner of the AgriRisk High Achiever of the Year Skerman Farming. Dan Skerman will speak about the importance of data but also his experiences with carbon baseline assessments.

Cotton Australia has lodged a submission the Queensland Competition Authority on Sunwater irrigation pricing. The submission highlights key issues and urges QCA to consider input from individual irrigators, local bodies, and QFF. Thanks to all the regional managers and CGA's for lodging submissions.

ABARES Agricultural Outlook released

The nominal value of cotton production is forecast to fall by 18% to $3.0 billion in 2023–24, reflecting reduced production and lower global prices. Cotton production is forecast to fall further in 2024–25 to $2.9 billion as lower production due to less favourable seasonal conditions offsets expected higher global prices.

APVMA Emergency Use Permit Shield Bug

The APVMA has issued an Emergency Use Permit which allows the use of Shield insecticide (clothianidin) at an application rate of 375 mL/ha for control of Brown Shield Bug in cotton. Use is permitted in NSW and QLD only.

Growers give mother nature a helping hand in St. George

The St. George Cotton Growers Association recently gave mother nature a helping hand by boosting native fish stocks in the Balonne River. Local cotton growers are also sponsoring the upcoming 'Carp Buster' event in mid- March.
