Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

This Weeks Summary

 
 

Daytime construction closures are in place at multiple locations across Marlborough. Please refer to each area's section for further information.

Kenepuru: 

  • Moetapu Bay Road, 4.2km from the start of the road.
  • Kenepuru Road, prior to Mahau Sound.
  • Kenepuru Road, Broughton Bay. 
  • Te Mahia Road.
  • Portage Heights, from Portage Resort.

Tennyson Inlet:

  • Archers Road, 2km from the start of the road.

All work is subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of unsuitable conditions, work will be rescheduled to the next suitable workday.

In the French Pass, retaining wall construction continues on Croisilles Road and Croisilles-French Pass Road under stop/go traffic management.

On Archers Road in Tennyson Inlet, crews are making good progress on a retaining wall under a construction closure. 

Work continues under a construction closure on Moetapu Bay Road.

Construction closures are in place on Kenepuru Road, prior to Mahau Sound, near Broughton Bay and at Portage Heights. Crews will ensure vehicles do not get stuck between closure points. 

Titirangi Road is open to the public, minor works will be completed at the end of October. 

Work at Elie Bay Road will recommence on Monday 20 October under a construction closure for three days. 

Construction is complete on Port Underwood Road near Whatamango Bay, with sweeping and road marking planned for next week. 

Crews continue to work on a slip on Northbank Road under stop/go traffic management. 

There will be no work scheduled on the upcoming public holidays:

  • Labour Day on Monday 27 October. 
  • Marlborough Anniversary on Monday 3 November.

Work will stop at noon on the Friday before each of the long weekends. 

Please plan ahead and allow for delay in these areas.

New road closures

 
 

Please refer to each area's section for information on existing and delayed road closures on Kenepuru Road, Moetapu Bay Road, Te Mahia Road and Archers Road. 

During all planned road closures, emergency services will always be accommodated. 

Elie Bay Road

From Monday 20 October to Wednesday 22 October, construction closures will be in place to all traffic on Elie Bay Road form 7am to 5pm. The closure will be approximately 800m from the start of the road, after property number 470.

This closure is required for the construction of a road retreat, drainage improvements and road reinstatement.

French Pass

 
 

On Croisilles Road approximately 1.2km before the Hope Drive/Wharf Road intersection, crews are constructing the pavement and laying geogrid, before completing drainage repairs. This site is under stop/go traffic management. Please expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

From Monday 20 October crews will establish on Croisilles Road, approximately 1.6km before the Hope Drive/Wharf intersection for the construction of a retaining wall and subsoil counterfort drains. This site will be under stop/go traffic management.

Work continues at several sites on Croisilles-French Pass Road.

At approximately 2km past Okiwi Bay, work is progressing on the construction of an H-Pile retaining wall and drainage improvements. This week crews are finishing the timber lagging, progressing the backfill, and installing production anchors. 

Approximately 1.5km prior to the Elaine Bay Road turnoff when travelling North, crews have prepped and poured the concrete channel and built up the road camber. This week crews are installing two culverts. 

Both sites are currently under stop/go traffic management, with delays up to 15 minutes at each site.

Work on the mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) wall, approximately 2km past the Elaine Bay turn off when travelling North is complete. Crews have completed the pavement preparation and swale dig out and have disestablished from site. Sealing will be carried out in coordination with the prior two sites.

On Te-Towaka Port Ligar Road in Hamilton Bay, crews have cleared water tables and fixed road damage.

Kenepuru

 
 

Work continues at several sites on Kenepuru Road between Linkwater and the Heads.

At two adjacent sites approximately 3.3km before the Mahau Road turn-off shoulder repair and retaining wall construction continues. This week crews are installing culverts and retaining wall drainage, and progressing the backfill. 

At approximately 2.5km before the Mahau Road turn-off, site rails are being installed. A construction closure remains in place, and has been extended until late-October, with openings on the hour:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 3.30pm.

Work may be undertaken outside of these days and times, including on Saturday, under stop/go traffic management with up to 15-minute delays.

On Kenepuru Road, near Broughton Bay, work has commenced on retaining wall and drainage repairs under a construction closure. The closure is in place until mid-December at the following times:

  • Monday from 10am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm.
  • Tuesday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Work may be undertaken outside of these days and times, under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Work on Te Mahia Road continues under a construction closure. This week crews are progressing the road retreat and installing culverts. 

The closures are scheduled on weekdays until late-October at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Work will be undertaken outside of these days and times, under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes.

Construction closures continue at Portage Heights, located from Portage Resort for approximately 1km towards the Heads, as work continues on several retaining walls. This week crews are pouring the kerb and channel and excavating the existing pavement. Closures are in place at the following times

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Crews have completed the H-Pile retaining wall at Sandy Bay on Kenepuru Road and disestablished from site. Pavement work at this site is scheduled for late October.

On Kenepuru Road beyond the Heads, a road retreat has commenced at Ohauparuparu Bay. This site is under stop/go traffic lights with maximum wait times of 15 minutes.

Titirangi Road is open to the public. Crews will complete the remaining minor remedial work in late October.

Work will recommence on Elie Bay Road on Monday 20 October under a construction closure for work on a road retreat, drainage improvements and road reinstatement.

The closure will be in place from Monday 20 October to Wednesday 22 October from 7am to 5pm.

Moetapu Bay Road

 
 

Work continues on Moetapu Bay Road approximately 4.5km from the start of the road under a construction closure. The closure is in place on Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm, with openings on the hour.

Work may be undertaken outside of these dates and times under stop/go traffic management with up to 15-minute delays.

The site has been excavated, and this week crews are progressing a gabion wall and installing a culvert.

Northbank

 
 

Work continues under stop/go traffic management with possible delays of up to 30 minutes throughout the day, when rock debris is being cleared from the road.

Between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday crews will continue to remove slip material.

30-minute delays may occur between 9am and 4pm and 5pm to 6pm. These delays are unable to be scheduled, as they're dependent on the amount of rock material that drops each time. No planned delays will occur between 7am and 9am and 4pm to 5pm.

Outside of work times, the site will continue to operate under traffic lights with approximately 3-minute delays. 

If the road is deemed unsafe at any time, the road will be closed and an update sent via Antenno and the Council’s website.

 

 

Port Underwood

 
 

On Port Underwood Road at Whatamango Bay road sweeping and line marking will be completed next week, pending favourable weather conditions. This work will be carried out from 7am to 5pm under stop/go traffic management with a 30km speed limit. Please expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Crews are continuing maintenance work on Port Underwood Road between Rarangi and Tumbledown Bay under stop/go traffic management. 

 

 

Tennyson Inlet

 
 

Work continues on Archers Road, approximately 2km from the start of the road, for the construction of two road retreats and a retaining wall. Crews have tested anchors, and concreted rail iron piles. Anchor installation, backfilling and lagging is now underway.

Closures are in place on the following days and times:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm.
  • Friday from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Kenepuru Road restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road is open to the public, with overweight and overlength vehicle restrictions in place. 

Reduced speed limit signage and temporary traffic lights are in place at Portage Heights and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). Both sites have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and side roads.

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Other recovery roads

Please be aware that on all roads, works may be in progress and/or traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads being closed at short notice. Regardless of the status of the road, please drive to the conditions.
