This was an important opportunity to connect on Country and learn about how the Restoration of Reef Islands Project will deliver activities to increase the resilience of Bajigal’s environment. ATSIMS Reef Guardian School experienceSeventy-five Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in Marine Science (ATSIMS) students from Ingham to Bowen came together recently at James Cook University, Townsville. The Reef Authority was proud to be a leading partner in the event, delivering interactive sessions on turtle identification, including size, diet, and the impacts of marine debris. Great Barrier Reef social science symposiumLast month, the Reef Authority and 11 research, non-profit and government partners hosted the 5th Annual Symposium of the Social Science Community for the Great Barrier Reef – an event showcasing the importance of the human dimension to conservation, and how social science plays a critical role in the evolution of Reef management. Seasonal closureWoody Island and Low Island form the Low Isles, located 15 km north-east of Port Douglas. Visitors are advised that there is a seasonal closure in place at Woody Island from 29 September 2025 to 31 March 2026 – no public access is permitted. This closure is part of broader site arrangements. It aims to protect sensitive habitats and bird nesting and roosting grounds at Low Isles. During this time, Low Island at Low Isles remains open to visitors. Biggest Reef clean-up!Join the 2025 Great Barrier Reef Clean-up in October and help remove as much marine debris as possible before the wet season begins. Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s ReefClean program and Clean Up Australia invite individuals, communities, schools and businesses in Queensland to come together to protect the Great Barrier Reef from the impacts of marine debris.
