HCI Master's Student Awarded Funding for EDI-Related ResearchPallavi Sodhi is a first-year master’s student in the Human-Computer Interaction program. Through her research, Sodhi will be exploring accessibility in video games: understanding what accessibility features are available, how they are designed, and what their benefits and limitations are from the perspective of those who create and play them. Sodhi is one of six students awarded funding to support summer research projects related to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). The Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Research Award responds to a specific recommendation in Carleton’s EDI Action Plan and is a landmark recognition for EDI scholarship in Ontario higher education. Students will present their research process and findings during Carleton’s annual Inclusion Week in Fall 2023. The award is funded by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and administered by the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities. |

Shahrzad Kahrizi, a Master of Entrepreneurship candidate in the TIM program, is the inaugural recipient of the Zonta International Women in STEM Scholarship, a new scholarship designed to encourage women to pursue education, career opportunities, and leadership roles in information technology.
An international student from Iran with a background in Industrial Engineering, Kahrizi is a research assistant in the Cross-Border Digital Inclusive Entrepreneurship Center at Sprott. Her research focuses on cross-border entrepreneurial opportunities, innovation community building and revenue generation opportunities for the center.
"For a new immigrant like me, it is important to have clubs and associations like Zonta that support women, especially in entrepreneurship and in areas like science and technology. I am very thankful for this award," said Kahrizi during her acceptance speech.

Article written by Joy SpearChief-Morris, an Indigenous Black Canadian writer, advocate, and retired Team Canada athlete who will be graduating in June from Carleton’s Master of Journalism program.
I sat in the lobby of the Delta Hotel in Quebec City waiting for my interviewees to arrive. They were two sisters, residential school survivors in the city for the Papal Visit preparing to be part of a meeting with Pope Francis the next day.
The sisters had agreed to sit down with me and talk about their experience and how they felt about meeting the Pope. I hadn’t met them before and had only spoken with one of the sisters’ daughters over text.
As I waited, I went over my questions in my notes. I tried to remember the fundamentals of the trauma-informed journalism lecture from our professor, Matthew Pearson, during that past year’s Master of Journalism classes at Carleton University.

Carleton community members, government officials and industry representatives gathered today to mark the official opening of Carleton’s Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research (CABER). The state-of-the-art facility will be used to investigate innovative materials and design strategies for completing retrofits and building new homes in ways that prioritize energy conservation and affordability.
“Carleton is committed to finding solutions to problems that affect all Canadians,” said Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton president and vice-chancellor. “The opening of this remarkable research facility focused on energy efficiency is another shining example of this commitment.”
Led by Mechanical Engineering Professor Cynthia Cruickshank, Carleton CABER researchers will investigate how heat, air and moisture move through materials and highly insulated wall systems, and how these elements contribute to occupant health, comfort and building science risks.
