October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Veterinarians are in a unique position to recognize and respond to the intersection between domestic violence and animal abuse. Research consistently shows that threats or harm to companion animals are often used as a tool of control in abusive relationships, and that victims may delay leaving dangerous situations out of fear for their pets’ safety.

As a profession that cares deeply about the human–animal bond, we can help by being informed, observant, and supportive. Understanding the signs, knowing how to respond safely, and sharing appropriate resources can make a critical difference.

Key Resources for Veterinary Professionals:

  • Safe Havens for Pets: A directory of shelters that accommodate both survivors and their pets.
  • The National Link Coalition: Information on the connection between animal abuse and human violence.
  • The National Domestic Violence Hotline: 24/7 confidential support and information.

By recognizing the signs and connecting clients with help, veterinarians can be a vital part of the safety net for both people and animals affected by violence.

ABVP Foundation Update

Jerry Rusch, DVM, DABVP (Beef Cattle), Outreach Chair

The ABVP Foundation's focus is raising money to fund expenses for
students to attend the annual Symposium. For 2025, we have raised
$10,000 of our $20,000 fundraising goal. To help us achieve our goal,
please donate by using the QR code below. We are a 501c3 entity, so
donations are tax deductible. We were able to send 7 student fellows to the
2025 Symposium in San Antonio. Our goal for 2026 is to fund 10 fellows.

Like last year at Symposium, we will be having another silent auction at the
2026 Boston Symposium. If you have something you would like to donate,
please contact Chris Griffin, Jerry Rusch, Raj Singh, Gary Thompson or Nik
Weber

Assistant Instructors Needed

Greg Lisciandro, DVM, DABVP (Canine & Feline), DACVECC, Canine & Feline Regent

Dr. Greg Lisciandro is looking for assistant instructors to teach the US-guided Procedures Workshop (HOW) that will include the following skills.

  1. Abdominocentesis
  2. Thoracocentesis
  3. Pericardiocentesis
  4. US-guided FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate)
  5. Tru-cut Biopsy
  6. Over-the-needle Catheterization
  7. Central Venous Catheterization (Seldinger Technique), with the curriculum not completely finalized.

The skills of in-plane and out-of-plane needle advancement and proper orientation and handling of the devices will be incorporated with the procedures. We use phantom models and have used cadavers in the past, although we are focusing on additional phantom models (commercially available and handmade) with the intent of eliminating cadavers for 2026.

Please email Greg Lisciandro if you are interested and you are always welcome to call Greg at 210-260-5576.

Thank you and looking forward to ABVP Boston 2026!
