The Reef Authority recognises her extraordinary contributions to the Great Barrier Reef and to Australian marine science more broadly. Sea Country Connections Traditional Owners keeping an Eye on the ReefIn a crucial step forward for localised management of the Great Barrier Reef, Traditional Owners recently participated in one of the world’s largest citizen science programs in the build-up to summer. Fish now take the stairsMackay Regional Council, through our Reef Guardian Council program, have successfully completed a major engineering project: Australia's longest rock ramp fishway (think: underwater stairs) on Jolimont Creek. Illegal fishing targeted to protect the ReefHigh-tech drones and targeted compliance patrols will be deployed across the Reef to deter illegal fishing in no-take green zones over the peak summer holiday period. New research, published in Nature, shows marine park zoning has helped to boost fish populations and coral resilience – with a positive spill-over effect of more fish stocks in waters open to fishing. Student-led Reef innovation making wavesOne of our Year 6 Reef Guardian School students and EcoWarrior leaders, Felicity, has taken her learning in Entrepreneurial Science Technology and Sustainability (ESTAS) to an inspiring new level. Felicity designed and developed her very own educational card game called Reef Rivals. Reef health updatesAs lead managers of the Great Barrier Reef, we keep an eye on its health year-round. Our updates are released weekly over summer, covering sea surface temperatures, rainfall and floods, cyclones, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, and coral disease. #LovetheReef highlights The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority acknowledges the continuing Sea Country management and custodianship of the Great Barrier Reef by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners whose rich cultures, heritage values, enduring connections and shared efforts protect the Reef for future generations.
