Welcome to the January 2026 edition of the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership newsletter. This month, we highlight new initiatives, business resources, and upcoming events that support growth across our region.
FedDev Ontario Funding Programs: Webinar for Sarnia-Lambton Businesses - Wednesday, January 28, 2026

Hosted in partnership with FedDev Ontario, this one-hour webinar will provide participants with a clear walkthrough of current federal funding programs available to businesses and organizations in the region, including but not limited to: - Funding for SMEs and
businesses – Support for businesses looking to innovate, grow, and compete.
- Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) – Funding to support businesses and organizations impacted by tariffs.
- Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) – Funding for businesses and organizations seeking to enter or expand within defence supply chains and increase industrial and innovation capacity.
Participants will receive an overview of program
objectives, eligibility requirements, supported project types, and application processes, with a focus on helping organizations understand how these programs may align with their specific circumstances and priorities.
Support Available for Businesses Navigating CUSMA and Trade Tariffs Canadian exporters face evolving requirements under the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), particularly around rules of origin, customs procedures, and certification. Western Ontario Fall Funders Forum Connects Businesses with Funding Programs Last month, the Western Ontario Fall Funders Forum brought together local businesses, organizations, and municipalities to hear directly from provincial ministry representatives about current grant and incentive programs. Attendees gained practical insight into funding options that support business growth, innovation, and workforce development, along with a clearer understanding of application processes and eligibility requirements. The forum also
created space for regional networking and knowledge sharing across sectors.

SkillUP Industry Innovation Challenge Connects Students with Local Employers The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership, in collaboration with Lambton College, hosted the SkillUP Industry Innovation Challenge on December 3, bringing together 100 Grade 11 and 12 Specialist High Skills Major students from construction, manufacturing, and agriculture programs. Students worked in teams to tackle real-world challenges provided by local employers, strengthening their problem-solving and communication skills while gaining insight into
career pathways available in Sarnia-Lambton. The event highlighted the value of connecting youth with industry mentors and helping students understand how classroom learning translates into real workplace expectations.

IDEA Leadership Academy Webinar: Practical Workforce Leadership for Employers - Thursday, February 26, 2026

The IDEA Leadership Academy is offering a live, two-hour online session designed for employers and people leaders navigating today’s workforce challenges. This practical webinar focuses on real leadership decisions that influence recruitment, retention, collaboration, and long-term workforce stability. Designed to fit busy schedules, the session provides actionable tools rather than theory, and participants will receive a training certificate upon completion. Time spent in the session can also be applied toward CPHR Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours.

The survey gathers confidential employer insights that support local labour market research, workforce planning, and evidence-based decision-making across Sarnia-Lambton. Employer participation helps ensure future workforce initiatives reflect real business needs and local conditions.

Online Workshop Series Supporting Franco-Ontarian Women Entrepreneurs / Série d'ateliers en ligne soutenant les femmes entrepreneures franco-ontariennes Fédération des gens d’affaires francophones de l’Ontario (FGA) is launching the fifth edition of its Programme d’ateliers pour l’entrepreneuriat féminin (PALF), a series of eight online workshops designed to support Franco-Ontarian women entrepreneurs in their growth and expansion. The program focuses on helping participants clarify their vision, strengthen their market positioning,
and build their businesses in a strategic and sustainable way. These sessions offer practical guidance and peer learning for entrepreneurs at various stages of development. / La Fédération des gens d'affaires francophones de l'Ontario (FGA) lance la cinquième édition de son Programme d'ateliers pour l'entrepreneuriat féminin (PALF), une série de huit ateliers en ligne conçus pour soutenir les femmes entrepreneures franco-ontariennes dans leur croissance et leur expansion. The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership team is pleased to offer complimentary guidance and support in confirming eligibility, refining applications, and connecting qualified proponents directly with provincial and federal program representatives to help transform solid growth plans into funded projects. Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) in southern OntarioThe RTRI supports businesses and sectors impacted by tariffs through projects that can be executed in the timeframe of this initiative (March 2025 to March 2028).Businesses can normally request: - $125,000 to
$10 million in repayable funding; or
- $125,000 to $1 million in non-repayable funding.
Not-for-profit organizations can normally request a minimum of $125,000 to $10 million in non-repayable funding. FedDev Ontario is accepting applications on a continuous basis.
Regional Defence Investment Initiative in Southern OntarioThe Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) is a $357.5-million initiative, delivered by Canada’s regional development agencies, to support Canada’s defence and security needs while strengthening regional economic development. Apply by January 21, 2026, if your proposed project and eligible costs start before March 31, 2026. Applications that show immediate and significant expenditure need during the current fiscal year will be given priority. If your project and proposed activities start on or after April 1, 2026, applications will be accepted until funding is fully committed.
FedDev Ontario - Funding for Businesses in Southern OntarioFedDev Ontario provides funding and business support to help organizations across southern Ontario innovate, scale their operations, and strengthen regional economic development. - a minimum of $125,000 up to a maximum of $10 million per project
in repayable contribution funding.

Southwestern Ontario Development FundThe Southwestern Ontario Development Fund provides support for projects and investments to existing businesses, municipalities and not-for-profit organizations for economic development in southwestern Ontario. Loans up to
15% funding to a maximum of $5M, interest-free. Up to 30% may be forgiven. Grants up to 15% to a maximum of $500,000. Intake now open
Ontario Centre of Innovation Digitalization Competence Centre ProgramsDCC has three program streams to support SMEs in the adoption and implementation of digital technology: Most OCI programs operate on a rolling or continuous intake basis, allowing applications to be submitted year-round as funding remains available.
Ontario Centre of Innovation - Retail Modernization Project Grant (RMPG)Receive up to $5K in support to adopt and implement digital technologies, hardware and software. Best suited for: Minimum 1 year in business with at least $100K of annual revenue Direct-to-Consumer business with a physical storefront (i.e., retail, restaurants & food, professional services such as hairstyling, florists, etc.) Ontario-based-for-profit business with between 1-50 employees First-come, first-served model, while funds last

Homeowners in Sarnia, Brights Grove and Point Edward are eligible for exclusive, limited-time rebates, including free home energy assessments, insulation, draft proofing and electric heat pumps when they work with a program-approved contractor. Rebates are also available for windows and doors, heat pump water heaters and more.
