Night works - SH16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku Stage 2 geotech investigations

We will be working by the Kumeū bridge to undertake geotechnical investigations to inform our design for Stage 2 of the SH16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku project. The investigations will assist us to plan and design the safety improvements, including the shared path, as well as identifying any potential geotechnical issues that we need to be aware of. This work follows on from initial geotechnical investigations we undertook back in December.

Work will start on the night of Monday 15 February and will be carried out over 5 nights, weather dependent.

Working at night means we are able to reduce the impact on traffic along the state highway.

What impact will you have on traffic?

The west bound lane (heading into Kumeū from Brigham Creek) will be closed between 8pm-5am for five nights, which means the team will manage traffic with stop-and-go signage through the work site.

There will be temporary speed limits as you approach Kumeū Bridge, reducing from 60kmh to 30kmh. This is needed to keep our workers safe alongside the highway.

Travelling from 8pm along SH16 between Riverhead Road and Weza Lane in Kumeū will take longer than usual, however both lanes will be reinstated by 5am.

Why are you doing this project?

Waka Kotahi is committed to the Government’s Vision Zero strategy, which aspires to a New Zealand where no-one is killed or seriously injured on our roads. Under the Vision Zero philosophy, no loss of life is acceptable. It is based on the fact that we are human and humans inevitably make mistakes so, while the road system needs to keep us moving, it must also be designed to protect us.

State Highway 16 Brigham Creek to Waimauku project's primary aim is to improve safety along this section of highway as well as to enable people to walk and cycle along Stage 2 of the project. Stage 2 is the section between Brigham Creek and Kumeū, which will include:

  • Putting in flexible road safety barriers to catch drivers who leave their lane before hitting something harder like trees, poles, ditches or other vehicles. Flexible barriers will be installed along the road except between Taupaki and Kumeū.

  • Adding extra lanes between Brigham Creek and Taupaki roundabout from two lanes to four Heading (two in each direction), to help improve travel times in the short-term, ahead of longer-term improvements.

  • Putting in a flush median, which is a painted area in the middle of the road to give you more room and a safe place to wait before turning, while traffic can continue to flow.

  • SH16/Coatesville Riverhead Highway intersection improvements to help traffic flow better and make it safer to turn.

  • Creating a new shared path between Kumeū and Brigham Creek for walking and cycling. By connecting into the wider Auckland cycling network, we are providing genuine travel choice for the community.
