Looking back over Stage 1
Over the last two years our crew have built uphill crawler lanes, straightened the road around the most challenging bends, installed median safety barriers and new electronic message boards and CCTV to help monitor the road and keep people up to date with the latest traffic and travel information.
These changes will provide better visibility, more safety features, and a smoother, less demanding journey, which will help stop people being killed or seriously injured on this road.
Since work started in October 2019, more than 85,000 cubic metres of earthworks have been moved, 25,000 tonnes of asphalt have been laid, and more than 8,000 trees and shrubs have been planted.
This stage will initially open at 80kph on the uphill lanes with a small section on the downhill lane between Hugh Duncan Street and the SH2 interchange remaining at 50kph whilst the last work on the culvert is completed.
Residents on Hugh Duncan Street have told us the new right turn pockets make a real change for the better.
It can be hard to remember what the road looked like before the project began but the changes are pretty significant. Here are some before and after photos that really show how different Stage 1 looks now.
