Northern Corridor Improvements

An epic crossing

As part of the state highway upgrades on Auckland’s North Shore, 17 new gantries have been installed across the project.

The final (and largest) gantry was recently installed on site. Spanning 55 metres and crossing eight lanes of motorway, the structure was transported to site from Napier in four pieces before being assembled. Installation required a full overnight motorway closure with a 250T crane on site – check out the above timelapse footage we captured.

Next year, it’ll have directional signage added including information for drivers travelling southbound towards the city centre or westbound to State Highway 18 via the direct underpass connection which is due to open in mid-2023.

Update: SH1 Upper Harbour Highway northbound offramp

While we’ve been working to upgrade the Upper Harbour Highway/Constellation Drive interchange, the far-left lane of the SH1 Upper Harbour Highway northbound offramp has remained closed. With the interchange upgrades nearly completed, the far-left lane will open in November.

Part of the upgrades in this area has included new traffic islands and streetlights, widening the footpaths and installing new traffic signal equipment including upgrading the IT systems which run the light phasing across interchange’s two onramps and two offramps.

It’s a complex location which requires 47 different light signal aspects to ensure everyone can get around and help manage congestion during peak times. Each of the 47 light signal aspects all need to ‘talk to each other’ to ensure optimised sequencing and efficiency of the interchange for all modes of transport - whether on foot, by bike or whilst driving a vehicle.

Fire and Emergency visit the underpass

We recently hosted Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) from Takapuna, East Coast Bays and Albany branches to take a first-hand look at the SH1 to SH18 underpass which is currently under construction.

Over the course of their visit, the group learnt about the fire proofing measures which have been included in the underpass as well as details on the fire hydrant equipment installed in case of an incident so the crew know where to find these on site.

Mark Neville, Senior Station Officer shared his thoughts on the importance of these visits for crews “FENZ respond to a wide range of emergency incidents. Preplanning is vital to ensuring we send the appropriate response to effectively mitigate hazards in the safest possible manner. Roadways are one of the many situations that expose our people to risk. Visits such as this help us to identify access and facilities that may assist us in emergencies.”

When open in mid-2023, the underpass will provide a direct motorway to motorway connection for people and goods travelling from the north on SH1 and heading west on SH18.  It is the final link of the western ring route which provides resilience and reliability for journeys in the Auckland region.

Latest photos from site

Working in a busy urban environment which thousands of vehicles travel through each day means we can’t close motorway lanes or intersections to get some of the necessary construction tasks we have to carry out during the day.

At the moment, a lot of work is done at night when traffic volumes are lower so we have a much smaller impact on the Auckland motorway network which is vital for Auckland’s economy.
