If you've not joined us yet, then do email Ellen. These are informal and informative networking sessions for those working in the Barnet Voluntary, Community, Faith & Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector, where we can come together to discuss environmental issues in the Borough, and work out how we as a sector can make a difference. This networking group will raise awareness of environmental projects that are happening in the Borough, help to establish partnerships and joint initiatives and seek funding opportunities. Online awards...Sustainable City Awards
Barnet Council's BarNET ZERO sustainability campaign has been shortlisted for Public Sector Campaign of the Year, at the Sustainable City Awards 2023, which are coordinated by environmental charity Global Action Plan and supported by the Mayor
of London. They celebrate the organisations and individuals who are driving change for a green and thriving London. If you would like to join the online awards ceremony which takes place on 10 May at 3:30pm, you can register to via Sustainable City Awards.
Shop Local...Plant sales at GROW
The GROW farm at Totteridge Academy has two plant sales in May. You’ll be able to buy veg, herb, flower and house plants plus teas, coffees and cakes.
The first is on Monday 1 May 10am to 2pm and the second is on Monday 29 May. It’s also holding several pick your own flower events and open days during the year.

Apply Now for Air Quality Sensors
Breathe London Communities Programme is providing 20 fully funded air quality sensors to community groups, as part of the Breathe London network. All successful applicants will be supported by Imperial College in using the monitoring data and engaging with their communities, including online workshops and in person meetings. They are looking for projects that:
. Can lead to an improvement in local air pollution or a reduction in exposure to pollution (or both).
. Include a strong aspect of community involvement.
. Are representative of the diversity of London. Last year NW7 Hub and Christ's College Finchley were successful and are now providing valuable data for the Council's Air Quality Action Plan, currently under consultation. An Interesting read...Good Cop, Bad Cop: How environmental charities can take advantage of direct action
This NFP report looks at the impact of environmental social movements engaged in non-violent civil disobedience and explores how charities can adapt to their presence. Discussing the role and relevance of both types of organisation, the report asks how environmental charities can effectively engage with this changing landscape and how they can connect with the groundswell of public concern for environmental
issues.
Marginalised people disproportionately face the impacts of the climate crisis even though historically they have contributed to it the least. Join us for this event on climate justice, where you will hear from inspiring speakers from racialised community groups who are offering solutions led by and for these communities in response to the hastening climate and ecological emergencies. Climate Action Fund - Nature and Climate
This funding aims to help communities to address climate change. The National Lottery are looking for projects that focus on the link between nature and climate. They're wanting to fund projects that use nature to encourage more community-led climate action. These projects should also bring other important social and economic benefits ie creation of strong, resilient and healthy communities or the development of ‘green’ skills and jobs. Making London a greener city for all
City Bridge Trust are looking to award Revenue Grants to fund local projects that take an equitable approach to mitigating and/or adapting to climate change. They encourage applications both from organisations that already actively focus on climate and nature and those that have not previously seen environmental action as a priority. Strong applications will show environmental consideration throughout. Applications accepted on a rolling basis
The Aviva Community Fund helps local causes build stronger communities across the UK. They are keen to fund projects that promote healthy, thriving communities by preventing, preparing for and protecting against the impacts of climate change. They also give causes access to volunteering and professional coaching opportunities,
as well as tools and resources to help build their capabilities and achieve long-term sustainable success.
Barnet Playing Field, Barnet - playground consultation The proposal is that this new playground will be in a similar location to the current playground, the outdoor gym will remain, the basketball hoop will be removed; the new playground will be bigger than the current playground; the new playground will cater for a greater age range and the shape of the new playground takes into account the proposed wheeled sports park included in the master plan. Air Quality Action Plan 2023 - 2028 consultation So that we can continue to improve air quality across the borough we have produced a new draft Air Quality Action Plan 2023- 2028 (External link)(AQAP) which is also part of the council’s duty to contribute to London Local Air Quality Management. Community Event Funding from Barnet Council Barnet Council’s vision is to make Barnet a ‘Borough of Fun’, where those who live and work have opportunities to enjoy life and celebrate the things that are important to them. EFN's Green Fundraisers Forum Meeting
This bi-monthly meeting from the Environmental Funders Network is an informal virtual gathering, a chance to come together, meet other people fundraising in the environment sector, and discuss issues, questions, thoughts and ideas that might be of interest to the group at large. Events coinciding with National Urban Tree Festival Week There will be two events at the Tiny Forest in May:
On Wednesday May 17th Earthwatch are organising a science day for schools and community. They will be doing the usual carbon capture and biodiversity counts, as well as something around thermal comfort and flood prevention. The community slot is 1430-1600. Lots more information and resources can be found on the Tiny Forest. For those of us who cannot attend during a weekday, we'll do a session on Sunday May 21 at 1100-1230. On that day we can also do some litter picking and/or weeding as
required. If anyone can make that it would be great! West Hendon Arts and Culture Society is holding a community event at West Hendon Community Hub, Damsel Walk/Marsh Drive, London NW9 7QQ on 17 May 2023 from 17:30 to 20:00. The main focus is on trees, but with a range of other environmental and sustainability content and activities. This will be a family event with children's activities, food, talks and demos. Urban Tree Festival is a joint event with Eco Show and Tell. With funding support from North London Waste Authority and Barnet Council
