SH2 Remutaka Hill Progress Update

Roadworks update

15 November 2024

The underslip repairs on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill are progressing well.

Works to build a retaining wall are continuing, with all piles now in place and the timber wall construction underway.

Temporary scaffolding has been set up to give the crew extra protection in the steep working environment and to provide a temporary working platform for the anchoring rig.

Next week, work crews will be installing rock anchors and backfilling behind the newly installed retaining wall. The project is progressing well (weather permitting) and will be finished by Christmas.

We have also been doing routine maintenance to make the most of the night-time closures. This has included road resurfacing, line marking, renewing drainage, clearing channels, mowing, and installing new barriers and signs. We have also been removing loose rocks from the overslip site.

SH2, Remutaka Hill road will reopen earlier on Tuesday 19th November at 2.30am. This allows road users to travel earlier to avoid potential disruption from hīkoi activity.

There will be chipsealing near Twin Lakes on Monday 25th November at night with stop/go traffic controls in place, if you need to make the midnight crossing that night, please leave slightly earlier to make sure you make the crossing.

Drivers needing to cross the hill during the night closures must book in advance as space on escorted crossing is limited. There is only one midnight crossing available each way to maximise our working window, so works can be completed as quickly as possible. Bookings can be made on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website:
