Safety improvements progressing well

Great news, safety improvements on State Highway 3 are a step closer, with designs for two of the four roundabouts between Waitara and Bell Block well underway.

Following the Government’s commitment to funding for improvements, we’ve been working with New Plymouth District Council to progress project design, consents and conversations with landowners.

The safety improvements will help prevent deaths and serious injuries on the busy highway and support future residential growth in Bell Block and Waitara.

Improvements include roundabouts at the intersections of De Havilland Drive/Airport Drive, Princess Street, Waitara, and SH3a along with sections of roadside and median barrier, widened centrelines and other intersection improvements.

The project is being designed in two phases, with construction staggered over three summer construction seasons to reduce disruption to traffic and residents.

The project team is currently working through phase one of the project - the design of the De Havilland Drive/Airport Drive and Princess Street roundabouts and a package of early works which includes changes to the Bayly Street/SH3 intersection, along with sections of wide centreline.

Extensive engagement with stakeholders and the community was undertaken during 2017 and 2018 to understand the issues with this road and what could be done to improve it. The project team is considering this feedback and working closely with iwi, and other stakeholders as it develops designs.

We hope this update finds you and your whānau well. While construction of non-essential works was shut down during the COVID-19 Alert Level 4, Waka Kotahi, Council employees and consultants continued to work from home to progress projects. We are now in Alert Level 3, and we are reinstating and resuming all physical state highway maintenance activities, and capital works construction projects that were shut down at Alert Level 4.

SH3 Waitara to Bell Block speed review

In November and December last year Waka Kotahi formally consulted on proposed speed limit changes on SH3 between Waitara to Bell Block. Thanks to everyone who took the time to make a submission.

Changing speed limits is a legal process and so it is important that we are following due process for implementing changes. We are currently in the final stages of analysing the submissions and technical safety data in order to provide the outcome for this speed review.

We will keep you updated on the progress and we hope to be able to confirm the changes within the coming months.
