      Master Electricians Recognises Leading Sparkies at Excellence Awards

       

      Hutt Valley electrical company, Seven Electrical, won the top excellence award at the 2024 Master Electricians Awards ceremony at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland on Friday 25 October. The event was attended by Hon Chris Penk, Minister of Housing and Construction.

      In addition to scooping the Master Electrician of the Year Award, Seven Electrical took the Excellence Award for a Project (over $5 million) for its work on the purpose-built Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre. Tākina is a multi-architectural award-winning building with an iconic design brought to life by customised LED strip lighting.

      “Seven Electrical has demonstrated all-round industry leadership and mastery in its electrical contracting,” says Alexandra Vranyac-Wheeler, Chief Executive Officer of Master Electricians New Zealand. “Their work on a project of national significance responded to a series of demanding challenges that included technical and design complexity, resource scarcity, innovation, management demands and timing pressures.”

In support of this equipment, we provide maintenance support through two New Zealand based maintenance technicians. These technicians have a wealth of industry experience and adaptability. Where necessary they have also undergone OEM maintenance training in the country of origin. We adhere to both OEM and internal strict processes and procedures.

      Our core customers are highly experienced, using highly technical capabilities and have expectations of high equipment availability, with little to no downtime. It is therefore critical that we employ competent, professional technicians.

      Under our current customer maintenance contracts, we do have spare capacity and so we are exploring the opportunity of possibly assisting other companies that may require technical maintenance surge or resources to meet specific projects, where a full-time employee may not be a viable option.

      Mills Street Stopbank Upgrade: Strengthening Hutt Valley Flood Defences

      Greater Wellington is excited to announce that Stage 1 of the Mills Street Stopbank upgrade has been successfully completed, with further enhancements underway to strengthen flood defences for the Hutt Valley.

      The Eastern side of the Hutt River Trail between Melling Link Bridge and Kennedy Good Bridge will remain closed to walkers and cyclists to allow for river and rock works. Haul roads and work areas established for the stopbank upgrade will need to be used for these works.

      Trail users will need to continue following alternative routes, and it’s likely that trail closures, on either the Eastern or Western sides, will remain in place until the Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi programme is completed.

      Patience and cooperation during this important work are appreciated.

      Sludge dryer operation

      The plant sludge dryer resumed service on 27 September after two successive outages.

      As always happens after a major incident, an investigation into the cause is undertaken and lessons identified to help reduce the risk of a repeat and to assess the response to the incident.

      There is an independent review of the investigation and recommendations.

      We expect to have incident reports on the fire and mechanical failure completed in November. As soon as we have discussed the findings with the plant operators Veolia and confirmed an action plan, we will publish the reports and the actions being taken.

      Now that the sludge dryer is reaching the end of its serviceable life, we have sought advice from the manufacturer and an independent specialist as they are experts with this equipment.

      • These steps will minimise the risk of further failures of dryer components over the next four years, until the new dryer is installed and operational.
       
       
       

      Biofilter Air Distribution System Renewal

      We are pleased to advise we have completed the work to refurbish and upgrade the biofilter.

      The installation of the new plenum (air distribution system) and new isolation valves was completed ahead of the timeframe set by GWRC in the abatement notice. These improvements have:

      • restored the capacity of the biofilter for treatment
      • optimised the way odour is distributed within the biofilter
      • improved operability for all aspects of the treatment plant

      This progress completes all the works which started last summer to upgrade the biofilter media and air distribution system.

      Biofilter upgrade is complete.

       
       
       

      Odour Treatment Renewal Project

      Now the biofilter upgrade is complete, the next step is to improve the capture of odours that are not currently reaching the biofilter for treatment.

      The design work to install a new ventilation system in the screening building, where large solids are removed from wastewater as it enters the plant, is nearing completion.

      Physical works are due to start after the summer holiday period.

      Once the new building ventilation system is installed, we will replace the ducting that removes the odour from the milliscreens and conveys it to the exterior ducts leading to the biofilter.

      We are also developing a solution to improve the management of air from the sludge dryer building.

      Bidable reflects on growth and new opportunities in 2024.

      2024 brought a year of growth and new opportunities for BidABLE. Looking back, the key was entering the Kapiti and Horowhenua Electra Business Awards. On reflection, entering the awards and submitting an RFP proposal are very similar.

      How are they the same?

      It starts with planning your application or response to an RFP (Request for Proposal). Look at the questions, understand what they are asking (you need to read them more than once before you start writing), and agree on who will draft the response and what message you want to get across in your answer.

      Next is drafting the answer

      Do you already have content, and how relevant is it? Read the question again and your existing content. Does it answer the question in the first paragraph? No, then rewrite or start from scratch. To score highly, you must answer the question in the first paragraph. No waffle. Judges or evaluators have so many applications or submissions that they skim your responses, so make it easy for them.

      Do not be intimidated by the questions; it is a good process because it gets you thinking about your business and may give you ideas on how to improve or make changes for the better. It certainly did for me.

      I completed all these components for my application and got the call that I was a finalist.

      Next came meeting the judges and preparing for that, which is the same as preparing to present to the evaluation board for new business; again, this involves planning, brainstorming, deciding on the messaging and practising.
