NSO & SYO Preceptorials

Host a Preceptorial!

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to connect with Penn students! See below for some of the guidelines for 2021 Preceptorials.

• They can be hosted by many members of the Penn community including faculty, staff, resource centers, and/or departments.

• NSO Preceptorials are primarily delivered in-person, on-campus with the option to pre-record or host virtually.

• This year, we are offering Preceptorials to first-year students during New Student Orientation (NSO) on Saturday, August 28 from 11am-2pm.

• For the first time ever, we also are offering Preceptorials to second-year students during our inaugural Second-Year Orientation (SYO) on Monday, August 30 from 11am-4pm.

• Our staff will manage the advertising, registration (if applicable), and video archival process so that hosts can focus on delivering the content of their session(s)

• Our Preceptorial catalog is updated daily on our website and sent to students via email during NSO & SYO.

• Information about how to host a Preceptorial in the fall semester will be released shortly.

• Visit our website to learn more about how to get involved in NSO 2021.

Below you will find a brief overview of the responsibilities of PRP Group Facilitators.

  • Group Facilitators will lead small groups of students (generally around 20-25) on campus the afternoon of Friday, August 27 for a discussion of August Wilson’s landmark play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
  • By serving as a PRP Group Facilitator, you’ll meet our newest undergraduates and help them along at the very beginning of their Penn journey.
  • Ma Rainey is one of ten plays in Wilson’s so-called Pittsburgh Cycle, which explores connections between generations of Black families and their neighborhoods and communities. A particular thematic focus this year will be interaction with the Philadelphia community and beyond on projects that unite and enrich us all. A fuller description of both Ma Rainey and the Theme can found here.
  • Since group discussions will be in-person on campus, Group Facilitators will need to be here, and willing and able to meet with small groups in classrooms; beyond that, it is open on a first-come-first served basis to all who would like to participate.
