On the Road to Zero

One year into the Road to Zero strategy, alongside communities and the wider transport sector, we're well underway with plans to improve outcomes for road safety.

Road to Zero has the vision of a New Zealand where no one is killed or seriously injured while travelling on our roads.

The long-term goal of this vision is supported by a target of a 40% reduction in deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Steady progress towards this target would mean around 750 fewer people would be killed and 5,600 fewer would be seriously injured on our roads over the next 9 years.

To reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads and streets, we need to create a safe system designed for people. As humans we’re vulnerable. We need to design a system that recognises that fact. We all make mistakes. But we shouldn’t pay for those mistakes with our lives.

So, we’re looking at all the factors that make up a safe system. Along with other factors, it includes infrastructure upgrades, such as median barriers and rumble strips. It includes safe speeds – making sure the speed limit is set according to the risk of the road. And it includes looking at the safety of our vehicles. It’s a way we can create an Aotearoa where we can all get back home to our whānau safely.

Find more information about this strategy here.

Te Oreore Underslip

We’re continuing to dewater and regularly monitor this site ahead of the construction of a permanent road. Water levels in the landslip area are being maintained at below the trigger event levels.

Hapokopoko Curve Rock

We’ve completed work on the MSE (mechanically stabilised earth) wall and as you can see the site’s looking in good shape.

Due to challenging ground and weather conditions late last year, we had to delay completion on thes site. Work is now progressing on the southbound lane pavement repairs, with sealing planned for early March.

Temporary two-way traffic lights are operational on this site.

South Raupiu Retreat

There was a pause in work due to an unstable slope face and winter weather. Like Hapokopoko, we originally intended to complete the work here before Christmas. We’ve unfortunately had to push this completion date back further as we work our way through various issues.

Because of this, completion date is likely to be pushed back to late February or early March.

Early this month, in conjunction with iwi, and council, we removed a concrete beam and guardrail from Mangawhero River this month. The beam and guardrail were dropped into the river early in the project due to the instability of the site.

Sealing is planned to happen in the last week of February.

Temporary traffic light safety

Please continue to stop for red lights at all temporary traffic lights on State Highway 4. These lights are in place for the safety of all motorists as well as that of our work crews.

While many of these traffic lights are currently on a timer system, some will soon be moving to a sensor system. But either way, it’s important that everyone remains patient and follows the traffic light signals.
