Stage 2 update - Brigham Creek to Kumeū

Our team has now completed all the investigations in the road corridor and has started investigations and surveys on private property. These investigations help us to complete our preliminary design by telling us about ground conditions such as types of soil and rocks and overland flow paths, and what vegetation, trees and wildlife are about.

In total we plan to have completed seven ecological assessments, 31 topographical surveys and 57 individual geotechnical site investigations for Stage 2. That's over 14 km's of assessments and surveys our specialists will need to walk.

Geotechnical investigations can be the most disruptive as we need to use tools and sometimes machinery to assess the soil.

What's next on Stage 2?

Our first surveys on private property have changed the alignment of the safety improvements we are working to provide. This has taken extra time for us to complete.

Once we have finished all the site surveys we will be able to complete our draft design. This means we will be able to work out the cost of construction and assess this against our budget. We will also have a better understanding of what potential land requirements we will have. At this point we will contact landowners impacted by the project. Once we have spoken to impacted land owners  we will be able to share the plans for the wider public's feedback.

Coatesville / Riverhead Highway intersection

You've told us that you are not happy with how the intersection between SH16 and Coatesville/Riverhead Highway is working.

Our permanent plan is to build a roundabout at the intersection, making it safe for people traveling in all directions. To put in a roundabout will take time as we need to complete our design, secure designation, consents and increase our land footprint all before we can begin construction.

In the meantime our safety team has assessed the current layout to see what can be done as a temporary measure. We will be able to share the outcome of that assessment in the next couple of months and seek your feedback on any changes.

Stage 1 Update - Huapai to Waimauku

Stage 1 of the project, between Huapai and Waimauku, is still on hold while we work to resolve the appeal to our Notice of Requirement (NoR). While this is frustrating for people who would like us to get on and make this section of the highway safer, we need to ensure everyone who is impacted has an opportunity for their views to be considered.

We will update you as soon as we are able to.
