Latest update on Te Ara Tupua

Kia ora,

Construction work continues on the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section of Te Ara Tupua, creating a more resilient transport connection between Lower Hutt and Wellington and new choices of ways to get around.

We've made progress on construction of the offshore habitats, and started construction of the resilient coastal edges at each end of the project.

In Honiana Te Puni Reserve, work continues towards completing the new shared path which will provide commuters and visitors a more convenient route around our work sites.

Check out the updates and photos from our team in the update below!

New building begins to take shape at Honiana Te Puni

At the Western end of Pito-One beach is Honiana Te Puni Reserve. Te Ara Tupua Alliance crews have been busy since the start of project works and you can now see the new shared clubs building is beginning to take shape.

The building, which will house facilities for both the Wellington Water Ski Club and the Wellington Rowing Association, has its foundation, and framing has begun.

Work in this area also includes a new parking space (for both the clubs, and visitors to the Reserve), and a shared path connecting to the existing shared path along the foreshore.

Work on the clubs building follows on from the completion of the Tāwharau Pods buildings which are being prepared for use as the Project Information Centre and studio for iwi cultural artists.

The plans for these buildings were developed collaboratively by Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika (as the Reserve is iwi-owned land), Hutt City Council, the Rowing Association, the Water Ski Club and the project team.

The two clubs have agreed to relocate into the new building as their existing facilities, on the west of the Reserve, are within the construction area and yard space for the project. You can read more about the work in the Reserve on the project website.

Coastal construction picking up steam

We are making progress on the new coastal edge along the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section of Te Ara Tupua.

The first of two offshore habitats, the small 'islands' you can see alongside the project area, has been completed. These habitats have been built to provide space for birds and other species to use, both during construction and into the future. They are located far enough offshore to mean that any birds on them won't be disturbed by construction machinery on the new pathway.

The project team have already seen wildlife visiting the habitats, including seals and birds.

Work is also progressing along the new resilient coastal edges at each end of the project. At Pito-One we've begun placing the concrete X-blocs that will protect the land from damage and erosion by waves. Each block has a specific spot, and is placed with precision using GPS location technology.
