State Highway 20B (SH20B) early improvements

Welcome to the first edition of the SH20B early improvements project newsletter.
We will deliver weekly updates on the current progress and what’s coming up.
Project overview
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading SH20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20 (SH20).
This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct, along Puhinui Road and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange. The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.
Fulton Hogan has been contracted to undertake this work on behalf of Waka Kotahi.
Key early improvements on SH20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

a safe place for people to walk and ride bikes

safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
-
improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment

two improved intersections at:

Campana Road to improve safety and allow for future development south of the state highway

Manukau Memorial Gardens to improve access and safety.

What’s happening next week (weather dependent)

Vegetation clearance along Puhinui Road between Orrs Road and Campana Road and near the Waokauri Bridge.

Installation of erosion and sediment controls from Pukaki Creek Bridge to Manukau Memorial Gardens.
Upcoming works
-
Night time installation of temporary steel safety barriers at various locations along the Puhinui Road shoulder. Please note there will be some light machinery and hand tool noise associated with this activity as the barriers are lifted into place and pinned down.

Service investigation works at drilling locations involving shoulder closures on Puhinui Road during the day and stop/go lane closures at night.

Stormwater works at various locations involving trenching across Puhinui Road at night.
Safety
Please note that when crews are working near the road, the speed limit will be 50 kph during the construction period. Please drive safely and allow extra time for your journey.
