SH5 and SH28 Harwoods RoadThe roundabout construction at the State Highway 5 and SH28-Harwoods Road intersection east of Tīrau is on track to finish in March 2026. Work on site is wrapping up ahead of the holiday break on Thursday 18 December when the current SH28-Harwoods Road closure and detour ends and a short stop/go on SH5 finishes. During the holiday period, a temporary roundabout and a 50km/h speed restriction will be in place to keep traffic moving safely through the intersection. When the holiday shutdown ends on Monday 5 January, the site will reopen with stop/go traffic management in place leading up to completion of the roundabout in March. Work began in late August to replace the T-intersection with a roundabout. The intersection has a poor safety record which NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) says can be improved by the 3-leg roundabout. Nearby, another SH5 safety improvement nearby is almost complete. The highway from SH28-Whites Road to Waimakariri Road is being widened to allow for wide centre lines. This will be back to 100km/h with a new surface and line marking by 18 December. The final 200m to Waimakariri Road will be completed later in summer. Meanwhile, a rebuild of 400m of SH28-Whites Road from south of the SH5 intersection will be done in February. The intersection itself will receive a new asphalt surface. Traffic will also be managed through the work under stop/go. roundabout under construction at SH5/28 |
